A perennial rainbow for early color! We asked our Dutch experts to mix together the best "wildflower bulbs" for our wildflower gardeners. And they outdid themselves. Here you have the mixed jewel-tones of the species Snow Crocus, brilliant red Miniature Tulips, blues, yellows and reds of Species Iris, vivid blue of grape hyacinths, and the pale blue of Spring Starflower (Ipheion)--all "wild" bulbs that bloom together in early spring for a thrilling display. (For even more wildflower color, add in a bag or two of our wide choice of wild miniature daffodils.)This mixture means early color in your wildflower meadow, before your wildflowers are up and blooming, a great burst of color for rockgardens, wonderful early carefree color under shrubs or around the front or back steps--a pure pleasure to enjoy every spring after you plant them. The bulbs are small, so planting is a snap, and you'll be adding a full month or more to your "wildflower season of bloom"!
By the way, all our bulbs are produced in Holland, so none of these have been gathered from their native lands, but all are actually or very close to the original unhybridized species, making them dependably perennial for your gardens.
* Tulip Species: The red tulips in the wild mixture are Tulipa Greigii "Red Riding Hood", often called "Rockgarden Tulips." They grow to only about 10" with enormous blooms relative to their height. The flowers open flatly for a very colorful display in full sunlight, and are so closely related to the wild species they are dependably perennial.
The "Wild Tulips". Click here to read the fascinating history of the Wild Tulips and Daffodils. There are about 150 species of species bulbs that occur in the wild from Central Asia all the way to Spain and Portugal. Most are native to rocky, arid regions east of Europe. It is hard to believe that these little flowers, more the size of crocus, are the original forms of the big flashy hybridized flowers we all know and love. But to any wildflower gardener who looks close, the brilliant colors and even the petal shapes and other characteristics are there. (By the way, all the species bulbs we sell are produced in Holland, so they are never gathered in the wild in their native lands.) They are all really botanical heirlooms in the truest sense, and deserve a place in every wild garden.
