Fall Bulb FAQ's
Camassia "Blue Melody"
is a hybrid of the famous native lily, with more delicate flowers and plants that are shorter--only 8 to 12"

The beautiful Camassia Lilly was made famous when it was seen by Lewis and Clark on their early expedition to the Pacific. Ever since then, gardeners everywhere have enjoyed this beautiful American wildflower, and the hydridizers have "improved" it several times. Blue Melody is particularly beautiful, with delicate flowers and a flower spike that reaches only a foot of less. (The native species often is much larger, growing as tall as 3 feet.) In any case, this is one of North America's little-known natives that belongs in every wildflower garden. The beautiful purplish-blue Camassia "Lily", sometimes called American Hyacinth, is native to our northern plains and mountain states, and figured prominently in Native American history. The lilies carpet open areas in the northern plains, and the bulbs were used for both food and medicine. The plant was "discovered" by Lewis and Clark as they ventured west, and found the Indians harvesting thousands of Camassia bulbs. Lewis tried the meal made from the bulbs, and found it didn't agree with him, but that's fine. You probably don't plan on eating your camassia bulbs. Just plant them in your garden and enjoy their blue beauty for years to come.
