Close to buildings, under high branches, at the edge of the lawn-anyplace that's too shady for a regular flower garden, but has some sun each day-at least four hours. Annuals bloom your first year, perennials the second-and then return each season with more and more blooms.

How to Plant your Shady Garden: Plant in spring after frosts, during summer, or in fall after growing season ends. Clear area of all existing growth, and till or loosen soil. Then scatter seed mix evenly and compress soil. Do not cover. Water carefully, and keep moist until seedlings are about 10" tall. Annuals bloom first year; perennials and biennials the second and successive years, forming larger and larger clumps.
