"Detroit Dark Red" is the perfectly round blood-red beet with roots that are sweet and smooth. Excellent, high-quality heirloom storage variety that has been around since 1892. Leaves are suitable for salad or braising too.
When and Where to Plant: Hardy Biennial (producing seed in its second year). Direct seed as soon as soil can be worked. Optimal germination temperature is 55-75ºF, but will germinate in temperatures as low as 45ºF. Thinned seedlings may be used as greens or baby beets. Transplants can be started indoors or in a cold frame 4-6 weeks before planting date. Prefers loamy soils with a pH over 6.0 and cool temps. Harvest at desired size. Plant Height: 8-12" tall.
