Bee Balm
One of our showiest native wildflowers is also a perennial garden favorite.

Monarda Coral Reef (Bee Balm) Photo courtesy of Dave's Garden
Bright red "Bee Balm" was one of the main wildflowers that caught the attention of our early settlers during the colonial days, but of course, the Indians knew it well. The spectacular "crown-shaped" flowers are favorites of hummingbirds and butterflies, and the plant is so beautiful in bloom, it's one of the few wildflowers that was immediately taken into perennial gardens. Since then, there have been wonderful hybrids of the famous red, and also the pinkish variety often called "Oswego Tea." Plant Bee Balm in full sun with plenty of moisture. And be sure the stems have good air circulation to avoid powdery mildew.
