Bee Balm. A hummingbird favorite, this mid-summer native makes great color for gardens and wild meadows.
Monarda didyma

Brignt red Bee Balm (shown in our photo blooming with golden Rudbeckia Goldsturm) is one of our most loved native wildflowers, and also one of the most popular perennials in the U.S. Lots of people don't realize this beauty is a native, since it grows in gardens beautifully, spreads slowly, and is a good garden plant.

Bee Balm is a plant of moist thickets and streambanks, so try to give yours a moist spot, and not too much blazing sun. The other big issues with this species is mildew. Without good air circulation, Bee Balm is subject to the dusty grey mildew that also attacks tall garden phlox. If it starts on your plants, run to the garden center and get the simple spray that's always available to control it.
