Unlike the famous Blue Flag, the taller Yellow Flag is not actually native to North America, but it is common here as a natrualized wildflower. It is a native of England and Europe. The spear-like foliage grows tall, up to four feet or more, and the large yellow flowers bloom within the foliage, not above it. This species is loved by many, but has become invasive in wet places in some states. It can grow rampantly, much like cattails, and clog waterways and ponds. Before planting, check to be sure Yellow Flag is not a pest species in your area.
