Wildflower How-To

This sunflower is the one you see in most of the fall arrangments at the florist. Not as tall as the garden giants, with flowers that have rich chocolate centers and petals of orangey gold. A real beauty, and a snap to grow anywhere in full sun.

Botanical Name: Helianthus annuus

Common Name: Sunflower, Taiyo

Type: Annual - lives only 1 year. Grows quickly, blooms heavily, then dies with frost. Regrows strongly from seed dropped in fall.

Color: Orange yellow flowers with a chocolate center.

Height: 60-72" tall (5-6' tall)

Bloom Time: Days to germinate: 10-14 depending on soil and weather conditions. Days to maturity: 70. (summer until frost)

Flower: Blooms are 8-12" across.

Sun/Shade: Full sun

Soil Preferences: Sunflowers will tolerate a wide range of soils.

Moisture Requirements: Average moisture, well drained. Heat and drought tolerant.

Where To Grow It: All regions of North America

Zones: 3-10

How To Grow It: One of the easiest plants in the world to grow from seed. Plant in spring after danger of frost is past. Can be distributed lightly into a meadow, or used as a solid wall or screen as a background.
