This is almost everybody's favorite fern. Jet black stems and fronds in a circular pattern.

If there were a beauty contest for these plants, this is the clear winner, at least in the judgement of most gardeners. This is beautiful American Maidenhair, a delicate but tough native of woods all the way from Canada to Georgia. In early spring, fine black stems reach high, and then suddenly unfurl into flat tray-like "hands" of delicate fronds, arrayed in a perfect circle. All Maidenhair asks is a moist shady spot and plenty of rich wood soil. It's magnicent with Trillium and other spring flowers.
