The Woodfern group is paticularly useful to gardeners for two reasons. First, like Christmas Fern, this somewhat larger species (to 30") has evergreen fronds, with a rich bluegreen color and ample substance to make them last right through frosts. Secondly, the plant creates a particularly elegant effect, since unlike others, this fern's fronds rise like a bouquet from a small exposed rootstock that serves as a small "trunk" for the plant, which is formed more like a small treefern or palm tree. Best of all, this one is not at all picky about soil, perfectly happy in any woodsy soil, acid or alkaline.
