Who Are We?  Our company is the brainchild of a Florida advertising executive and wildflower enthusiast, Ray Allen, and his wife, Chy, who moved to the Champlain Valley of Vermont in 1980 to fulfill their dream of popularizing wildflower gardening with the wider public.

Originally conceived as only a 6-acre tourist attraction with wildflower seeds and fields of flowers which the Allen's called "The Wildflower Farm," it quickly grew to be one of the most popular visitor attractions in New England.  Next, the Allens created a national wildflower seed and gift catalog which was mailed to a growing market that reached 1,500,000 recipients each year.  

During the mid-nineties, the catalog was sold, and a few years later, AmericanMeadows.com was begun.  Due to its early presence on the internet, American Meadows is one of the best-listed gardening sites on search engines, and with our management's background in advertising media, the company has been an aggressive user of new technologies since the beginning.  In fact, American Meadows was one of the first "Success Stories" featured on Google.com for over four years, as the search engine's now-famous Adwords Program grew.

American Meadows' Corporate Offices, Staff and Customer Service  Our professional offices and large warehouse building are located a few miles from the original Wildflower Farm, in the town of Williston, VT. Here, our staff conceives, produces, markets, plans, packs and ships our products year-round. (The Wildflower Farm location was sold in 2002.)

Our expert staff includes friendly, enthusiastic professionals, most all of whom have been with us for years.  Each department manager is challenged to uphold the long-established reputation we enjoy for fine products and individualized, caring customer service.  We have grown tremendously, but standards have never changed.  We will always be interested in each and every customer.  In fact, our owners still personally supervise our customer service.

Where Do the Bulbs, Seeds and Plants Come From?  AmericanMeadows.com contracts with growers around the globe to provide the best possible quality and variety available in our industry today, but all our wildflower seed sacks are still hand-packed by our own staff. Much of our wildflower seed comes from the fertile growing regions of central California and Oregon, while other species are produced in Europe, Africa and Asia. Regardless of origin, however, all are carefully inspected and tested. Though acceptable germination rates will vary by species, we are careful to maintain rates which far exceed industry standards.  Most of our seeds are grown exclusively for us, and once they arrive at our warehouse each seed package is carefully hand-packed, whether it's a 1/4 lb. sack or enough for a 10-acre planting.  All our mixtures are created using our own strict recipes, based on decades of both experience planting the seeds ourselves and talking with over a million wildflower gardeners from all over North America who have also planted our seeds.

Most of our bulbs are imported from Holland under a special arrangement with one of the oldest and finest Dutch exporters; other bulbs are grown in the US.  Our perennials are grown especially for American Meadows by seasoned experts in Holland, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.
