Red-spotted, yellow blooms add bold color to the summer garden and are fabulous both in the garden and containers.

Canna lilies are wonderful in the garden. Growing fast, the full size selections quickly form a handsome large-leaved screen or an island of tropical-looking foliage from about 3 to 4 feet tall.. And then the show begins, and goes on for weeks and weeks. Huge, iris-like flowers begin to open, and before you know it, your canna lily plants have become the undisputed center of attention in your entire yard. They're really this spectacular, and a snap to grow. They're really wetland plants, and can grow in moist ground. Constant wetness isn't necessary, but water them often. Cannas are used as municipal plantings in many places like Miami. They are so good at taking care of themselves, they add great stripes of color in median strips, parks, and other places. So pick out a sunny spot in your garden or yard, and add cannas for the big show this summer.

Our good friend, Jack Scheper, the plant expert who runs Floridata.com, tells us that cannas are native to Central and South America, and many of the current hybrids also have a North American species as a parent. Jack grows cannas, and is a big enthusiast. As he says, the foliage "looks like a small banana tree without the trunk."

The Pfitzer Dwarfs Many gardeners prefer the smaller cannas of the "Pfitzer" group. With smaller, but brilliant, bi-colored flowers, these cannas grow to only about 16". They're great for the front of borders or patio pots, making a thick clump of handsome foliage with a bouquet that goes on all season.

Comments about American Meadows Canna Lily Starship:

Proof that botanicals are astounding. The flower on this one demands up close attention so by having the plant at the edge of the lake and dock is perfect. It is almost orchid like. The leaves are not bad ... sort of a muddy green but that flower knocks me off my feet! Grew not as tall as the description says but I am waiting for next year ... as I have learned cannas like to be in the ground a while before they really come into their own.

Comments about American Meadows Canna Lily Starship:

Incredibly disappointed in this variety. I ordered them last fall for first delivery in late March 2015 (Zone 10). The tubers shipped were small to medium at best. Only 7 of 10 tubers sprouted. As of the end of May, I am getting blooms already but the plant stalk is at best 1 1/2 feet in height.

Total waste of money and energy.
