This is the runaway favorite, long one of American gardeners favorite plants. All over North America, this hardy spring beauty reigns supreme with graceful arching stems and its famous heart-shaped flowers. Choose a moist, shady spot, and you'll enjoy them for years.

Great color in the shade, The Bleeding Hearts. The genus Dicentra, commonly called Bleeding Heart, gives us some of the most treasured plants in America, providing dependable color in moist shade as companions with Hostas and Ferns. There are basically two major types:

1. Most popular and world-famous, is D. spectabilis, a species native to Japan. It is the larger of the two (to about 3 feet,) and has the famous little heart-shaped flowers arrayed along arching stems, a lot like a string of pearls. The large bleeding hearts bloom only in spring, and in some areas, disappear altogether by midsummer, much like Trilliums and Daffodils.
2. The second type, the Fernleaf Bleeding Hearts, are hybrids of North American native wildflowers. They are smaller with finely cut blue-green foliage and similar flowers. However, with the fernleafs, the flowers are more bunched at the top of the stems, more like a dangling bouquet. And best of all, these plants continue to bloom not only in spring, but all summer into fall.

Our native Dicentras are all wonderful wildflowers of woodland shade, from the eastern Dutchmans Breeches and Fringed Bleeding Heart to the Northwests Pacific Bleeding Heart.

These magnificent plants have long been a herald of spring in Zones 2 to 9, a huge area of the US. They are quite easy to grow, as long as woodland conditions are provided. That means some shade, plenty of moisture with good drainage, and rich soil. Once your clumps have become large, you can easily divide the rhizomes after flowering.

I don't have much experience with gardening but wanted to try to plant something which reminded me of my childhood. Planted Bleeding heart root last fall and didn't really know what to expect, but this spring seeing the plant coming up and blooming was a great feeling. I was little worried that squirrels might dig it up since we have tons of them in here, but everything went well.

I purchased three bare roots, and only one made it to bloom. They produced healthy foliage, but probably the reason why they did not bloom is because the plants were pretty young. Hopefully next Spring I will see bigger plants and finally some blooms. The plant per se is not one of the prettiest, in my opinion. I think most gardeners grow this plant because of the very particular flowers. These flowers, however, last no more than one or two weeks... which makes me think whether it is really that worth it growing this plant at all!

I have been wanting bleeding hearts ever since I was little and saw them in my grandmother's garden - and now I have them! When they bloomed this spring I was so happy. This is their first year in my garden and I hope to enjoy them for many years to come.

The plants grew alongside similar bleeding heart plants that did flower, but these did not. The plants are extremely healthy but are lacking flowers. I have no idea why.

Bought nine of these last year. Planted in partially shaded area in back yard. one had a 12 inch stem with about six or seven blossoms on it. A couple others sprouted about six inches with no flowers, and the rest failed completely. Will see if any improvement this year. At least from the ones that did grow.

I wanted to put in a 'shade garden' with a number of different shade loving plants, and this bleeding heart is doing very well for me. The 'rhizome tuber' was large and I could see the life in it when it arrived. It grew out quickly this spring and is blossoming quite profusely already. I plan to add more, and also of different kinds this fall. You can't go wrong with this if you like the 'Bleeding Hearts'

I have used bleeding hearts under Redbuds with dark pink tree peonies interplanted with Happy Family tulips and sweet woodruff as a ground cover. Beautiful Spring vignette!

Planted and watered as specified. I bouth e of these bareroot plants. I dies immediately. The next died shortly thereafter. The third was doing well and I actually thought it was going to make it. But sadly after a few months it died also. Will never purchase another bareroot plant again.

Content in shady terrace. Would probably be a little happier with a little more sun.

These were a little slow getting going but they did come back the second year and hopefully will spread more this spring.

The bleeding heart is one of my favorite flowers and I look forward to seeing it every year. It has beautiful "ferny" folliage and delicate, long-lasting flowers. When it's "chutes" show up in early spring I know I will be rewarded for planting it.

                                                            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
