USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

The 2005 Wildflower Wave has begun.

Welcome to Wildflowers, 2005. Our southwestern deserts are bursting into bloom right now, and early reports predict a really spectacular desert wildflower bloom this year. The Spring Wildflower Wave always begins in the deserts, then lights up the California coast, (photo) rolls eastward into Texas for big bloom in Mar/Apr, and then on to the midwest and east coast, where it rolls from south to north, finishing in May. For the bloom right now, go to the excellent DesertUSA website, which has photos, details, and daily wildflower reports. Another great site to visit is this one, now reporting early bloom: Wildflower Watch at Anza-Borrego State Park, California.
