USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.
Find your Plant Hardiness Zone here.

While the snow flies up north, the flowers bloom.

image002-11.jpg"The Wildflower Wave" we follow each spring has begun. The Southwestern deserts are lighting up with color while snow and cold continue in most of the country.  If you'd like to follow along, here are two fascinating sites that are updated daily, with reports and photos of what's happening. Yes, the wildflowers are in bloom:  Carol Leigh’s “California Wildflower Hotsheet” A photographer’s guide with up to the minute reports for all over the West Coast and deserts. Desert USA “Wildflower Reports”  Day by day reports and photos from photographers “chasing the flowers.”  The photo was taken by "Jared" on Feb. 19, 2008 in the town of Amboy, CA.  Click over to see this and more of his photos (among others) at Desert USA "Wildflower Reports" right now.
