Annuals, Biennials, Perennials…Oh My! When it comes to your garden and what to plant, the options can be overwhelming. This is also what makes gardening so fun. You can be as creative as you want and if you don’t like it, you can change it at any time.
When looking to add long lasting, low maintenance color to your garden, perennials are a sure bet. There are literally thousands of varieties of perennials for one to choose from in every height, color and texture you could imagine. Here at American Meadows we offer over 400 different perennial varieties in plant and bare-root form and over 75 from seed.
Perennials from Seed
When starting perennials from seed one must remember it will take 2 years before you begin to see flowers. The plant will need to go through a cold/winter period before it begins to flower the following season. Starting from seed can certainly be a more cost effective way to add a lot of color. When compared to buying mature plants in 1-2 gallon pots you may find yourself saving hundreds dollar in the long run and who doesn’t like saving money?!
Bare-root & Plug Perennials
With over 400 perennial varieties to choose from on our site, you’re sure to find something that will look perfect in your garden! All of our bare-root and plug perennials are 2-3 year old root stock…so what does that really mean to you? It means blooms shortly after planting. Our bare-root and plug perennials have been grown out and chilled so they are ready to begin bursting with color once planted.
Perennials make a great addition to any garden for a number of reasons. Once established and with a little TLC, perennials can last for years to come with very little maintenance. So make sure you choose a spot where you may want lasting color for at least a few years.
As I mentioned earlier, perennials can be found in endless color, height and bloom times so make sure you’ve gathered this information when planning. You don’t want to make the mistake of putting a 3’ perennial in front of a 12” one!
“Variety is the spice of life” and it couldn’t be truer when it comes to gardening with perennials!
