Plant Information

Picasso’s bi-color blooms create bold, unique color in the summer garden. They thrive in full sun and can be planted both in the garden and in containers.Growing Callas: Ever since Katherine Hepburn whispered, "The Calla Lilies are in bloom again," in one of her old films (Stage Door, 1937), American gardeners have thought of them as special. They are always a romantic favorite, particularly exquisite in arrangements. Callas are native to South Africa, and today they're not only easy to grow, but available in a literal rainbow of colors.

The common white one is Zantedeschia aethiopica, and like all callas, it's hardy in the US only in Zone 8 and above. This means these are 'tender bulbs' in most of the country, and have to be lifted and stored in fall. Many people grow callas in patio pots, and the pots can be brought in before frost.

Most of the very colorful callas are a separate species, C. rehmannii, and these have more narrow leaves than the classic white type. If you haven't grown callas, you may be surprised that these bulbs create a sizable plant. Sometimes the clumps grow 36' high. Most all callas have pointed or heart-shaped foliage that's dark green spattered with white spots. The bulbs are irregular, sort of like ginger roots, and several can be planted in the same pot. They enjoy being root-bound. If you plant your bulbs in spring, you'll have flowers in about 65 days.

Comments about American Meadows Calla Lily Bulb Picasso:

I was at first discouraged as these took a while to come up, but once they started, they BOOMED and they are just gorgeous. I expect they may have been slow due to the cool evening/night temps in VT. I plan on bringing them inside as houseplants this winter, and getting even more for outside next year. Fabulous container plant, beutiful flowers and foliage

The foilage of the Picasso Calla Lily grew as illustrated but it bloomed more creamy pink than purple in the center. It's compact & works great in containers.

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
