Anyone who's ever taken a hike in midsummer woods anywhere in the east probably knows this stunning plant. Cardinal flowers bloom with tall spikes of lipstick red flowers in August in wet American woodlands all the way from Canada to Louisiana.
"Compliment Deep Red" at about 3 feet is a little shorter than the native, but the color is the same--brilliant red. You'll love these vivid flowers as much as the hummingbirds. Pick a moist spot in sun or partial shade for yours.

I've planted these around my oriental poppies so that I have color later after the poppies die back. The hummingbirds love them!

About Me Master Gardener
Well, unfortunately it got devoured by caterpillars, but it did grow a new, ready for next year. The new shoots are very healthy. If it wasn't for the strong root system I would be telling you how it died. I'm looking forward to seeing this bloom next year.

The plant I received looks very hardy with lots of roots. Can't wait to see it bloom and attract hummingbirds!
It's cold in MT; need REDS!
from Deer Lodge MT
This perennial is perfect for a zone4 NE corner that gets only morning sun and the run-off from a gutter, and I get to look forward all winter to its wonderful red and the hummingbirds it attracts!
