Description
Dutch Master (King Alfred Improved) has been America's favorite daffodil for decades. (Read the King Alfred story below.) It's great for naturalizing, and creates the perfect early burst of classic color for any garden, wildflower meadow, or in fact, almost anyplace in your yard that doesn't need early mowing. Today, Dutch Master is literally the gold standard among daffodils, and by special arrangement with our importer, we make sure we always have them in good supply at great prices for our customers.

Imagine a field of fresh golden daffodils waving in the spring breeze. Remember the old movie, Dr. Zhivago? The spectacular vision of golden flowers carpeting the ground under spring-leaved trees. A drift of color up a hillside. A huge sweep of gold into the distance. As beautiful as the fantasy is, it couldn't be easier to create. And you only have to do it once.

Naturalizing Daffodils. Probably nothing in the gardening world is more foolproof and more rewarding than "naturalizing" daffodils. Because unlike most other garden flowers, these fantastic plants are super-easy to plant in fall, they don't care about soil, as long as it's well-drained, and they'll bloom beautifully for you with absolutely no work every spring after you plant them. Best of all, daffodils increase over the years, each bulb developing into a blooming clump. All you have to do is pick the spots. The one thing to remember is that you won't be able to mow that area until the tops die down. Everything else takes care of itself. In a new or established wildflower meadow, the wildflower plants grow up around the daffodils hiding the fading foliage, so there's no work to do. And if you're planting wildflower seed, what could be easier that to pop in the bulbs when you have the ground already turned?

OK, what's the best Dutch daffodil for naturalizing? Well, most daffodils naturalize just fine, but if you want the classic drift of golden blooms, here's the story.

The King Alfred Story The world's most famous daffodil is the tall, golden, large-cupped one named King Alfred. It was introduced in Holland in 1899, and was an instant success. So King Alfred is now over 100 years old. Over the years, improved versions of the "King" were developed and given other names which gradually replaced "King Alfred", except in one place--the US. The Dutch Bulb Authorities tell us that gardeners here are so in love with King Alfred that even when improvements were made, the growers in Holland simply applied the old name to their new products. So today, there are several King Alfreds marketed in the US, and some garden centers and nurseries still use just the original name. We prefer to explain the whole story. The main one of these improved King Alfreds is actually named Dutch Master, introduced in 1948. As the Dutch say, "it is better and stronger, a more vigorous look-alike. It makes bigger bulbs and throws more flowers than the original King Alfred". The Netherlands Bulb Information Center makes it very clear. If you're looking for King Alfred daffodils, look no further. This is it, with improvements you'll love.

I have received many bags of (50) Dutchmaster Daffodils over the past 3 years. Every bag has been a gem that keeps on giving. I like to plant them in clusters - the effect is overwhelming - neighbors stop to admire and so do I. The are uniform, hearty, robust and quite firm - not a flimsy flower. What a striking appearance. One thing I do before I plant each cluster is prepare a good bed with nice soil so there is good drainage and prosperous root growth. These beauties multiply from year to year. This is the best flower for us. We plan to add more clusters every year.

I bought these when they were on special at American Meadows. When the bags (I bought 2) arrived, I had to throw out 6-10 bulbs because they were covered in a grey mold and rotten. I decided to take a chance and plant the rest and they came up beautifully.

My opinion on this is you get what you pay for. Maybe if I hadn't waited until they were on special they would've been healthier.

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master:

We planted 100 of these about 300 yards from our house on the other side of a pond. I think every bulb came up and bloomed, some had multiple blooms. The blooms were so big and bright that they reflected off the water in the pond making it appear that there twice as many. I was surprised how big the bulbs were at least the size of a golf ball. I will be purchasing more.

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master:

I can't say enough about how wonderful these Dutch Master Trumpet Yellow Daffodils are. They are definitely classic and large in size to show up from a distance. Everyone who saw my Daffodils this Spring commented on how beautiful they looked as they drove by. People went out of their way to stop me on the street to say they noticed all of the Daffodils I planted and how beautiful they look around my home. There isn't anything to complain about these Daffodils as they are just drop dead gorgeous and very healthy. We had a very unusually cold winter but every bulb I planted came up. I have ordered just as many bulbs again this Fall to plant as I did last Fall. Then I will have them planted at all of the places I had in mind. I have found an easy way to plant Daffodil bulbs is to stick a metal pointed end of a tire iron in the ground and wiggle the metal bar back and forth until it has made the perfect size hole to drop the Daffodil bulb in and then I cover the hole. This method can save one a lot of time when planting bulbs. To say the least, I am very happy with my Dutch Master Trumpet Yellow Daffodils and I highly recommend them. I can easily see why Daffodils are one of America's favorite Spring Flowers.

I love these bulbs. I have a new yard and have purchased these many times from American Meadows. I like to add to them every year for massive color in the spring. Gives such a boost to see a yard full of these beauties when you plant at least 50 together in an area. I do have another 150 on order.

We had a sudden, sharp cold snap when these first opened. They not only made it through the cold, they stood back up and are still lovely.

Blooms not quite as huge as King Alfred, but still large, long-lasting and well worth planting.

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master:

I have these mixed with tulips both in containers (planted lasagna style), and in my front borders between some young camellias. The flowers are huge and vibrant - the neighbors routinely slow down to look at them when they drive by!

Also, these are super easy to grow, and the bulbs were big and really high quality - I only had one or two in the lot that needed to be tossed (totally expected). Which reminds me, make sure to inspect all the bulbs as soon as they come in - if you don't and you have a bad one, chances are it will spread to others if you don't get rid of it! Just the nature of the beast I guess.

I had almost 100% growth rate (I think some critters got to a few because I forgot to top them with hardware cloth this fall).

As a sidenote, my dad has laughed at people who order from mail-order places rather than going to the local big box for YEARS, claiming there's no difference in the end result. Well this year after seeing his newbie gardener-daughter's daffs, he is singing a different tune. We both planted daffs this year, but mine are twice the size of his! I have a feeling next year he'll be placing an order ;)

Try these - you won't be disappointed.

We loved the color, and despite several unseasonal freezes, the bloomed flowers came through. Just wished we had bought nore.

I planted these daffodil bulbs as a boarder in my flower garden and they are simply beautiful. These flowers brighten up my yard. Absolutely beautiful and easy flowers to maintain. I am going to transplant them in the fall and make a raised flower bed in my yard. Love the price when on sale too!

I love the Daffodil because you never have to replant them, after the flower dies you have a nice plant that last through out the summer.

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master:

I wanted a daffodil with a large, bright yellow flower that would hold up to rain and cold. These daffodils deliver everything I want. I couldn't believe how long the blooms looked fresh compared to other daffodils I have, even after being beaten with heavy rain and high winds. I can't wait until next spring to see them again!

Really loved the blooms, but bloom time was short. Could be the hot weather we had in March.

I am very disappointed with my orders from AM this year.
                                                    1. 1/3 of the 50 pk of daffs have bloom and am still waiting for the rest to poke out of the grown while bulbs from elsewhere are blooming left and right.
                                                    2. The daylilies are puny and it looks like I will need to wait a year before seeing any flowers.
                                                    3. The tulip bulbs looked sickly when they arrived. One has bloomed and it looks lackluster. The other ones dont look like they have much potential either.

                                                    Improving Garden Soil

                                                    Growing Plants in Containers

What is a "Quality Bulb," and Why Does Bulb Quality Matter?

Flower bulbs come in a wide variety of sizes. It is important to get the largest, best quality bulbs you can find. Larger bulbs help to ensure success, producing larger and stronger plants with more flowers.

Several flower bulbs are part of the onion family, and because of this I like to use Onions as a representation of how important bulb size is. Which of the onions on your shelf go bad first? The smallest ones! Larger onions are more resilient, taking longer to dry out/rot and can withstand swings in temperature better. Flower bulbs are the same. Larger bulbs will withstand disease, draught, large amounts of moisture, and colder temperatures significantly better than the smaller ones.

Here at American Meadows we are committed to providing you with the highest quality bulbs. This means we do everything we can to source the largest bulbs possible. Below is a comparison of bulbs purchased from three different retail stores:

Each of the glass tubes contains 20 Dutch Master Daffodils. Starting from the left, the first tube is what is sold here at American Meadows, the middle tube was purchased at a local “Home Supply” box store, and the third is another online retailer. The difference is easily noticeable.

The next picture is the same comparison, but with Tulip Bulbs:

Again, our bulbs are quite a bit larger than other retailers.

Other things to be aware of when it comes to bulb quality is making sure they are firm and without signs of external damage or cracking. Do your best to avoid bulbs that are already growing and have shoots or freshly grown roots. This is difficult when purchasing online, but if you are ordering through a reputable company, they should be checking for these things regularly.

Next time you are looking to buy bulbs, think about how much time you put into planning and planting your garden and then anxiously waiting for your flowers to grow and bloom. Don’t be disappointed after all that effort by planting sub-par bulbs. Buy the largest, firmest, disease free bulbs you can afford, and you will have the best possible results.
