Description

Many gardeners plant several butterfly bushes together, so they grow into a shrub-like clump with blooms in all the colors--purple, pink and white.

Butterfly Bush is a shrub-like plant that looks sort of like a compact lilac, grows quickly and blooms in mid-summer. But the name tells you all about it: Butterflies just can’t resist the flowers, and flock to the plants when they're in bloom.

The Magic: How the Butterfly Bush works: Buddleia or Butterfly Bush has been a sensation in American gardens for years, and no wonder. This plant is easy to grow, blooms profusely, and has that magical quality: Butterflies can’t resist it.

Here's why: It’s not just the pretty flowers that attract the butterflies, like any bright flower. Buddleias emit a special honey-scented fragrance that lures butterflies like a moth to a light, and then once there, they find the flowers super-rich in nectar.

A butterfly bush in the garden will often be seen with a mass of butterflies on the flowers, especially during hot sunny afternoons. Buddleias attract other insects too, like moths, and the reddish ones strongly attract hummingbirds. So it’s more than a name; it’s actually a botanical phenomenon.

Comments about American Meadows Butterfly Bush Black Night:

This year, I extended my vegetable garden around our fish pond and added perennial plants in the mix. My Butterfly plant was a slow grower and only had a few blooms. However, the blooms were a vibrant purple and attracted a gorgeous Swallowtail Butterfly daily along with hummingbirds!!

We received it as a little specimen early this summer and we planted within 3 days. The soil is not that great but it still did fine. We were surprised to see it flower being so small still. It 's about to go through it's first winter, but it looks great and healthy so we expect it will do well.

Comments about American Meadows Butterfly Bush Black Night:

The spikes were a beautiful deep purple and the foliage was an almost silvery green. I had quite a few butterflies, hummingbirds and hawk moths visiting my large flower bed. They seemed to take a particular interest in this and my obedient plant. The bushes are ultra-hardy and have survived me moving them twice now with little to no complaint.

I received a healthy little specimen after ordering this butterfly bush from American Meadows. It started flowering surprisingly soon, showing its rich dark coloring. Unfortunately, my sub-tropical zone seemed to be too much for it, and it died off. I would definitely order again, though, once I feel more confident in my gardening skills.

This is a very hardy plant. Survived for years in a container, and then when planted in a bed, years of being munched on by the deer. It still blooms profusely and grows back at a wicked rate. The only pest that seem to faze it are the deer. Drought, clay soil tolarant. Does not have a problem with competing roots. And so far has not gone completely dormant. This year we had snow that stuck around for about 4 day and my black knight still looks really good.
