USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Christmas Fern is one of the native treasures of the American woodland. With glossy green fronds that are usually under two feet in length, it can be found decorating the forest floor over much of the continent. The long-lasting glossy fronds and the plants very orderly habit (slow to spread) make it perfect for rich garden accents.

Comments about American Meadows Christmas Fern:

Chose this & Lady Ferns because they're on the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service "Native Plants for Wildlife Habitat and Conservation Landscaping: Chesapeake Bay Watershed" list. Planting in a wooded spot in the garden that backs up to a parking lot. Only saying 4 stars now since they've just started - will let you know how well they take in the long run....

I purchased this fern for a container accent plant.
I has grown to a larger size and is attractive.
Neighbors have asked me if it is real! Still green during cold weather.

Comments about American Meadows Christmas Fern:

Wanted to add some additional Christmas fern to my woods. Purchase them last fall. They are coming big and strong. Looking forward to enjoying them next winter when everything else dies back.

            Q & A

            Plant With These:

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
