Palace Purple is one of the Coral Bells that started the current craze. Hybridized from a naturally purple-leaved native species, bloom is pink and quite dramatic against the dark leaves.

A whole new group for your garden. Coral Bells, or the Heuchera are a group of small perennials commonly found as native plants in North American woodlands, and they've been ignored until recently. During the 1990s, some enterprising US nurserymen realized the Coral Bells were diamonds in the rough, and went to work. Their efforts have created a mini-sensation in the world of perennials, as more and more gardeners discover these great plants.

Some of the natives are alpines from the Rockies, others are dwellers in lowland southeastern forests. But all have several wonderful things in common.

They have beautiful foliage, with large leaves in several colors that remind many of grape leaves, and the foliage lasts through the winter. With hybridization, some of the foliage colors have become truly spectacular, with rich shades and fascinating bi-colors.

Now there are new Heuchera hybrids almost every year, and the group gains popularity all the time. They take full sun or partial shade. And while most of these are grown for their handsome foliage, many also have lovely flowers, some spectacular. Best of all, the plants bloom for weeks and weeks. The flowers rise from a clump of leaves on elegant, thin stems which are lined with the small bell-like blooms.

Comments about American Meadows Coral Bells Palace Purple:

I am chair of a garden club in a senior-citizen building in Silver Spring, Maryland. I gave this coral bells to a gardening neighbor because I have two of my own. They are on a fifteenth-floor outside rooftop, where they are in containers and placed in semi-shade behind a park bench. These plants are very hardy, tough, with attractive foliage. I just wish that they were evergreen. My friend's coral bells is happy in a pot on her balcony, and thriving.

Comments about American Meadows Coral Bells Palace Purple:

I bought 12 of these heuchera 6 weeks ago...they have more than doubled in size, are blooming, and the leaf color is amazing! They're a wonderful contrast to all the green foliage in my garden. A wonderful plant! (I attribute the vigor of these to the fantastic packaging by American Meadows.)

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
