Description
This Allium creates very straight, strong stems and thick, dense flowers. A group of these makes a sensational show in the garden.

About the Alliums. Every family has its beauties. And yes, these are the best-looking members of the family of Allium, which includes onions, leeks and chives. (The word, Allium, means 'onion' in Latin.) Many Allium species are native to Iran, where many tulips also originate, and the edible Alliums have been cultivated and a staple of diets for over 10,000 years.

The beauty of the small lavender flowerheads of chives have always been a decorative highlight in herb gardens. But in recent years, gardeners have become fascinated with the larger Alliums, particular the giants. As always, the Dutch hybridizers took them into their stocks, and now we have a whole group of beautiful new flowering onions for gardens. Most bloom in late spring so they bridge the gap nicely between the tulip season and early summer bloom of peonies and poppies.

Experienced gardeners plant these giant Alliums in groups of several bulbs, set very close together. The foliage is not attractive for long, so it's important to plant them next to other perennials whose foliage will more or less cover the Allium's base. This way, the wonderful flower stalks rise up and tower over the other flowers for a wonderful period of bloom.

Comments about American Meadows Allium Bulbs Gladiator:

I ordered 6 bulbs. 5 bloomed. They were stunning accents to my newer garden. The bulbs were large, but probably not 6" in diameter. Apparently someone else thought they were gorgeous too because they stole my 5th bloom straight out of my garden! I was devastated, to say the least. I will probably buy more of these this year. Maybe even the next size up.

Overall globe size is smaller than pictured unless the child's head is smaller than average. Actual size i would say is about 4.5" the most instead of 6". They are very cute tho, just smaller than i thought. I might try globe master next year.

I have always been fascinated by the Gladiator Allium, and never have I seen any first hand.I planted my Gladiator bulbs in the border beside my house. I fed the bulbs with bone meal when I planted them. All the plants came up beautifully and all bloomed. Although not quite as large as advertised, but still quite an eye catching display. I have had numerous compliments from folks walking by.

I love Allium plants! (So do bumble bees.) I first planted them in a CIRCLE around another plant, but found that planting them in a CLUSTER is so much more attractive. THEY MAKE A GORGEOUS DRIED FLOWER ARRANGEMENT: Towards the end of their blooming season, (1)cut them to desired length, (2)spray with hair spray, (3)dry, and (4)put them in a tall vase. Beautiful year after year!

This is my first year planting Alliums and they are coming up beautifully. We have very poor soil and rain has been scarce, but I expect in a day or so they will be fully bloomed and will be glorious to look at!

Comments about American Meadows Allium Bulbs Gladiator:

We bought our home five years ago and have been trying to bring it back to life. The gardens were so run over that you couldn't see the shrubs or even the front door. After many years and lots of love our yard looks like a botanical paradise. My favorite garden, the one that I pause at whenever possible is behind our laundry room window and just outside the morning room window. We have planted there poppies, peonies, iris in lush masses and these beautiful allium as a back drop. It's my little piece of Heaven! Much of the credit should go to American Meadows for their hardy products and dependable instructions. I know I can trust whatever I get from them to be simply GORGEOUS and last a long time. I'm looking forward to many more years of watching my "Piece of Heaven" grow.

I bought this bulb in the summer and received it "as promised" in the fall. My Mother and Grandmother had admired them in other gardens. After my Grandmother passed, my Mother wanted to plant some on her grave site. She could not find them. We were pleased when the bulbs were healthy and even larger than we had expected. Simply the most gorgeous plant.
