Description
Dutch Master (King Alfred Improved) has been America's favorite daffodil for decades. (Read the King Alfred story below.) It's great for naturalizing, and creates the perfect early burst of classic color for any garden, wildflower meadow, or in fact, almost anyplace in your yard that doesn't need early mowing. Today, Dutch Master is literally the gold standard among daffodils, and by special arrangement with our importer, we make sure we always have them in good supply at great prices for our customers.

Imagine a field of fresh golden daffodils waving in the spring breeze. Remember the old movie, Dr. Zhivago? The spectacular vision of golden flowers carpeting the ground under spring-leaved trees. A drift of color up a hillside. A huge sweep of gold into the distance. As beautiful as the fantasy is, it couldn't be easier to create. And you only have to do it once.

Naturalizing Daffodils. Probably nothing in the gardening world is more foolproof and more rewarding than "naturalizing" daffodils. Because unlike most other garden flowers, these fantastic plants are super-easy to plant in fall, they don't care about soil, as long as it's well-drained, and they'll bloom beautifully for you with absolutely no work every spring after you plant them. Best of all, daffodils increase over the years, each bulb developing into a blooming clump. All you have to do is pick the spots. The one thing to remember is that you won't be able to mow that area until the tops die down. Everything else takes care of itself. In a new or established wildflower meadow, the wildflower plants grow up around the daffodils hiding the fading foliage, so there's no work to do. And if you're planting wildflower seed, what could be easier that to pop in the bulbs when you have the ground already turned?

OK, what's the best Dutch daffodil for naturalizing? Well, most daffodils naturalize just fine, but if you want the classic drift of golden blooms, here's the story.

The King Alfred Story The world's most famous daffodil is the tall, golden, large-cupped one named King Alfred. It was introduced in Holland in 1899, and was an instant success. So King Alfred is now over 100 years old. Over the years, improved versions of the "King" were developed and given other names which gradually replaced "King Alfred", except in one place--the US. The Dutch Bulb Authorities tell us that gardeners here are so in love with King Alfred that even when improvements were made, the growers in Holland simply applied the old name to their new products. So today, there are several King Alfreds marketed in the US, and some garden centers and nurseries still use just the original name. We prefer to explain the whole story. The main one of these improved King Alfreds is actually named Dutch Master, introduced in 1948. As the Dutch say, "it is better and stronger, a more vigorous look-alike. It makes bigger bulbs and throws more flowers than the original King Alfred". The Netherlands Bulb Information Center makes it very clear. If you're looking for King Alfred daffodils, look no further. This is it, with improvements you'll love.

I have received many bags of (50) Dutchmaster Daffodils over the past 3 years. Every bag has been a gem that keeps on giving. I like to plant them in clusters - the effect is overwhelming - neighbors stop to admire and so do I. The are uniform, hearty, robust and quite firm - not a flimsy flower. What a striking appearance. One thing I do before I plant each cluster is prepare a good bed with nice soil so there is good drainage and prosperous root growth. These beauties multiply from year to year. This is the best flower for us. We plan to add more clusters every year.

I bought these when they were on special at American Meadows. When the bags (I bought 2) arrived, I had to throw out 6-10 bulbs because they were covered in a grey mold and rotten. I decided to take a chance and plant the rest and they came up beautifully.

My opinion on this is you get what you pay for. Maybe if I hadn't waited until they were on special they would've been healthier.

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master - Bag of 100:

I am very disappointed with my orders from AM this year.
      1. 1/3 of the 50 pk of daffs have bloom and am still waiting for the rest to poke out of the grown while bulbs from elsewhere are blooming left and right.
      2. The daylilies are puny and it looks like I will need to wait a year before seeing any flowers.
      3. The tulip bulbs looked sickly when they arrived. One has bloomed and it looks lackluster. The other ones dont look like they have much potential either.

Planted these in November 2011 and by late March 2012 we have a wonderful, mature bed of daffodils. So much better than the small ones that we purchased previously at the big box stores (i.e.[@]).

Have ordered a few times from American Meadows and have been pleased and happy with my purchases each time. [...] the products I have received (usually bulbs) have been healthy and grow nicely in my SC heat. The last batch of gladiola bulbs seemed smaller than previous purchases though. I just planted them a couple of weeks ago as my previous plantings were coming up, so I'm waiting for them to bloom and will follow up with a report on them once they bust thru!

I've been planting these bulbs in my yard each fall for several years now. The effect is stunning. The thing I love the best is that my hard work isn't dug up and eaten by the squirels and deer (apparently daffodil bulbs aren't as tasty as tulip bulbs). Great value too!

I planted under varying light conditions, which staggered their bloom times . . . I probably can find places for another 50

I need to add more but for the first year it did what I was looking to do. These are the largest bulbs I have ever purchased. I did not find anything negative about these except that I did not buy and plant enough!

these daffodils are easy and maintenance free. I used them in the woods, making holes with the shovel and placing several bulbs together. They were nice to see on the hillside this spring.
I will buy this product again and keep adding to the woods.

Found these bulbs far superior to nationally advertised expensive supplier's bulbs. Have now planted them in New England and the deep South.

As indicated, the 10 bulbs I purchased and planted & fertilized according to instructions, all bloomed beautifully the first year. The second year there was lush green growth, but only a couple bloomed!

Comments about American Meadows Trumpet Daffodil Bulbs Dutch Master - Bag of 100:

I have received many bags of (50) Dutchmaster Daffodils over the past 3 years. Every bag has been a gem that keeps on giving. I like to plant them in clusters - the effect is overwhelming - neighbors stop to admire and so do I. The are uniform, hearty, robust and quite firm - not a flimsy flower. What a striking appearance. One thing I do before I plant each cluster is prepare a good bed with nice soil so there is good drainage and prosperous root growth. These beauties multiply from year to year. This is the best flower for us. We plan to add more clusters every year.

I buy daffodil bulbs every year and have wanted the kind that will reproduce and naturalize quickly. I have some from a very expensive retailer that are five years old and still look like lonely soldiers. The bulbs I bought from American Meadows already look like they have multiplied and this is their first year! The color is brilliant and they are just lovely. They are perfect!

Used in wooded rock garden. All of the bulbs survived the winter, but not a single one bloomed. Will never purchase from American Meadows again!

I purchased these bulbs to plant in a very overgrown public area near a public nature trail. The daffodils were enjoyed by everyone taking their morning stroll or run.

The burst of yellow these bulbs bring is what I look forward to every Spring. I planted the 50 bulbs in groups of five in a garden surrounding 2 huge maple trees. All bulbs came up even though the amount of sunlight varies across the garden. I am thrilled with these bulbs and plan to plant another 50 this Fall - it's a big garden!
