Plant Information

Dutch Irises are the elegant ones you always see in fabulous spring flower arrangements. They're just as elegant in your garden, with tall, stately stems and exquisite flowers in a range of colors.

Not to be confused with the even larger bearded or German iris that bloom in late spring, these beauties are early spring flowers, and the bulbs are planted in fall just like daffodils and tulips.

Comments about American Meadows Dutch Iris Bulbs Excelsior:

Spring in the Northwest can be grey! These beautiful white to make a great combo. The rest I planted along the driveway with autumn crocus. Next to the bright green leaves of the crocus, the white definitely stands out. They certainly light up my yard and brighten my day. Wish I had bought lots more.

Comments about American Meadows Dutch Iris Bulbs Excelsior:

I waited breathlessly for weeks, then--Wham!--suddenly there were flower spikes almost overnight and then blooms! But the downside here is that they lasted barely a week. Next time I'll plant these for cut flowers rather than as part of a perennial plan.

Comments about American Meadows Dutch Iris Bulbs Excelsior:

We lost an oak tree to sudden oak death and I planted about 300 bulbs on the hillside that the oak once shaded. Just as the bulbs were starting to bloom my former 'gardening' service weed wacked the hillside, cut all the buds off with the exception of a group of Dutch Iris White Excelsior that were off to the side and had already started to bloom. I have now fired the yard service (I can't call them gardeners) and am hoping that the bulbs will grow and bloom next year.

            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
