Planted 3 of these in April in the northeast. I didn't know they would not become active until the ground temperature remained above 55, but even with a chilly prolonged spring they were strong enough to emerge in early June. When the sprouted, they grew like crazy! Some of my leaves were 2'long or more. Great addition to my raised garden.

I originally bought one hoping it would grow and fill a blank area. It took so long to even pop up that I wrote in, explained the situation and was sent another bulb. Whilst waiting to receive that one, the first one actually began to sprout. I did get the second and planted that one. It never grew at all. The first one did, but it never really took off the way I'd hoped it would.

Comments about American Meadows Elephant Ears:

The elephant ears were a disappointment. I planted them right away. It looked like they had some buds on them that wanted to grow, but they simply didn't produce anything. I have grown them successfully most every year. I looked recently and there were not even a small leaf

I was looking for a hardy Chicago tropical-looking plant for the front of my house. I'm very happy with the elephant ears I received. All came up and are even having "babies".

The description called these bulbs "huge." The only thing huge about them was my disappointment when they arrived. The size is average minus. They look healthy enough, but I can and did buy larger bulbs at local garden centers. I want the TRULY huge bulbs that used to be readily available. We'll see how they grow. I have a reputation to maintain in my neighborhood for growing huge elephant ears every year, very tall with LOTS of ears. My expectations are not very high this year.

I have planted two elephant ears bulbs a few weeks ago and I checked them yesterday.
One was mushy and oozing when i checked it and the other one is half or so rotted too.I don't know what happened because they are in nice sunny drained area of my yard .So disappointed with the result and that they ended in the trash!

This was my first order of Elephant Ears and first time planting. Since my home is for sale, I decided to plant them in containers so I can hopefully take them with me when I sell my home. [...]. I planted them about 2 weeks ago and was amazed how fast they are growing! I am located in sunny southern calofirnia and pretty much anything will grow when we add water so I am excited to see their progress.

The second year the leaves were smaller, but still quite large. It's in a large pot which makes it quite easy to dig up and store for the winter and then replant the folowing spring. It does very well in my mostly shady area. I love it!

Comments about American Meadows Elephant Ears:

I purchased two bulbs for the purpose of screening my well water pipe. I put each about 1 foot from the pipe and within a couple weeks they were popping up and within six weeks and beginning to hide the pipe.
They are breathtaking in size and color. Especially beneficial how long each leaf lasts.
I had no trouble for over-wintering; I dug each up, used lightweight, though large, pots and kept them indoors. Blooming continued at a slower pace. A few weeks before they could go outside, they began to look a bit weak but upon replanting, one week later they are back to growing fast.

Comments about American Meadows Elephant Ears:

I planted three of these softball-sized bulbs in beds at the edge of my patio on the south side of my house, and they grew like gangbusters. The 2-3 foot long leaves wave enticingly in the slightest breeze, enhancing the tropical look of my outdoor entertaining area.

The only drawback is my climate. I live in Zone 5b, so every fall I have to dig up the elephant ears and store them in my garage until springtime. The root/bulb mass can get very large, so I recommend dividing it up into chunks so you don't hurt your back lifting them.

                                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
