The Blue Allium brings true blue to the group. Only 24" tall with very large flowers, it'll look great in your garden.

About the Alliums. Every family has its beauties. And yes, these are the best-looking members of the family of Allium, which includes onions, leeks and chives. (The word, Allium, means 'onion' in Latin.) Many Allium species are native to Iran, where many tulips also originate, and the edible Alliums have been cultivated and a staple of diets for over 10,000 years.

The beauty of the small lavender flowerheads of chives have always been a decorative highlight in herb gardens. But in recent years, gardeners have become fascinated with the larger Alliums, particular the giants. As always, the Dutch hybridizers took them into their stocks, and now we have a whole group of beautiful new flowering onions for gardens. Most bloom in late spring so they bridge the gap nicely between the tulip season and early summer bloom of peonies and poppies.

Experienced gardeners plant these giant Alliums in groups of several bulbs, set very close together. The foliage is not attractive for long, so it's important to plant them next to other perennials whose foliage will more or less cover the Allium's base. This way, the wonderful flower stalks rise up and tower over the other flowers for a wonderful period of bloom.

I planted these last fall so this is their first year. They are smaller than they will be because they will strengthen and spread as the years go by. However, they look like vibrant blue star bursts. They are surprising to those who see them in the garden. They make people look and smile. I love them.

Comments about American Meadows Allium Bulbs True Blue:

I planted my bulbs last fall when I recieved them. We had a very wet fall in WI so I was a little worried about them, it was very cold when I planted. This spring has not been good either. It is nearing mid May and we still have some snow in areas, it has been very cold and again very wet, fields are flooded, but without fail I see these plants growing, they are quite large already considering how far behind everything else is in this weather. They've not yet flowered for me, but I don't doubt that they will since the health and strength of the green plant looks so well. I can't wait!

Comments about American Meadows Allium Bulbs True Blue:

Blue onion (Allium azureum) is so easy to grow, and so true and vivid a blue when it blooms (in my area) in June, that I can't for the life of me imagine why it's so hard to find in gardens. In the Mountain West, where I live, blue onions are virtually unknown, yet alliums of all kinds thrive out here and are reliably perennial if given adequate food and water. Wonderful for cutting, too, and can be grown in containers.

Comments about American Meadows Allium Bulbs True Blue:

I gave this Allium 4 stars because I have only 3 blooms from 10 bulbs. But I'm sure next year I'll have more. The bulb size is very small so I think that's the reason.
Attracts bees and insects and I like it's light blue color.

                            USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                            • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                            • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
