Planted three of these bulbs and got two plants. They have a pretty strong skunk-like odor when they first come up. They stand tall above all of my other flowers and add a lot of interest to my flower bed. They pop up later than other bulbs, but grow much faster.

Comments about American Meadows Red Crown Imperial Bulbs:

Planted two frittilaria rubras in flower bed to see if they will help with my gopher problem. Am impressed with how sturdy they are in the early wins we have had this spring. They are quite attractive and flowered even before my daffodils! Now I just have to "wait and see" if they are a good gopher deterrent.

Comments about American Meadows Red Crown Imperial Bulbs:

Only 1 of 3 bulbs bloomed and it was very short lived. All bulbs came up, but dried out and died back quickly. I did plant at the 45 degree angle as recommended. When I contacted customer support they were very helpful and responsive. They stood by their guarantee and issued me a credit for the bulbs. I was extremely impressed by the customer service and will definitely continue to order from American Meadows. All other bulbs I've purchased from AM bloomed beautifully.

Comments about American Meadows Red Crown Imperial Bulbs:

We have had an unusually cold Winter/Spring. I am still waiting for the plant to break ground. I gave as gift to my daughter and daughter-in-laws, all who live within a 40 mile radius of me and none of theirs has come up yet either. We are hopeful that once we get warmer temps they will come up and that they did not freeze this Winter.

This fritillaria was really disappointing. The plant is about a foot tall, but there are no flower buds. I know it's not too early for buds, because the yellow one next to it has some.

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
