Plant Information

Crocosmia is one of the brightest bulb flowers of them all. Mass them in your border, and you'll have a brilliant show of bright red in no time. Crocosmias are wildflowers in South Africa, and there are many species. (Montbretias are actually the result of crossing two Crocosmias.)

As a general rule, remember when planting South African bulbs, that these flowers are used to hot sun and gritty, fast-draining soil.

Comments about American Meadows Crocosmia Emberglow:

I planted some of these in the ground and some in a pot. The potted ones have grown foliage but so far (mid-September) have shown not a single flower. The ones in the ground either did not grow or were eaten by squirrels or chipmunks.

    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
