Description
Here's one of the brightest bulb flowers of them all, a famous Alan Bloom hybrid of a South African species. Mass them in your border, and you'll have a brilliant show of bright red in no time. Crocosmias are wildflowers in South Africa, and there are many species. This hybrid is famous for fiery red color. (Montbretias are actually the result of crossing two Crocosmias.)

As a general rule, remember when planting South African bulbs, that these flowers are used to hot sun and gritty, fast-draining soil.'

This looks beautiful, but I never saw it

By Stanley

Pros

  • Perennial

Cons

    Best Uses

I was really excited about this plant, its size, its flowers, the fact that it is perennial in my climate. But the planting instructions insisted on a pretty deep planting, which I observed. When none of the bulbs came up a month later, I dug down and found a couple and replanted them closer to the surface. A couple finally came up, but have yet to flower. They probably missed the right season. I would like to try them again, I will just plant using my own judgement.

Used for groups along a rail fence. Plants grew fast, numerous branching, really looked vigorous and healthy.

I have read the negative comments and did not have this experience. I ordered 8 packs and all happily grew for me. I kept the soil moist in an area the is mostly sunny. Have yet to bloom.

For two years in a row I've ordered and received crocosmia "lucifer" corms from American Meadows. I've followed planting directions closely. Last year I ordered 5 and this year I ordered two packs, or 10 corm altogether. NOT A SINGLE ONE HAS EVEN COME UP. Last year when none of the 5 came up I ordered some from a seller in Holland. 4 of 5 came up, but the planting date was too late by then, and they only got about 10 inches high, and then did not survive the winter. I'll not order again from American Meadows.
