Comments about American Meadows Mexican Shellflower Bulbs:

This has been my favorite flower for years. It has a show stopping presence and a wonderful addition to any garden. It is drought tolerant and easy to grow. Snip off the dead flower to send 'energy growth' back to the bulb. These bulbs send one one flower per day, it dies, and another amazing beautiful flower blooms the following day from the same bulb. They like sun and little management.

Got these as a bonus from American Meadows when I made an order. I didn't think to much about them because the picture doesn't show there beauty. I really did, plant and forget, about them until today when OMG a huge strange flower in my garden. I looked at the tag, I know I will order some for me and my daughter

          Best Uses

Comments about American Meadows Mexican Shellflower Bulbs:

I bought 2 packages of bulbs for a total of 50 plants and the yield is about 20 flowers. The bulbs looked good but no matter where I planted them, the plants were frail and the yield was low. I'm disappointed in these bulbs. I have bought Mexican shell flower bulbs in bargain department stores that have been much better.

I fell in love with this plant. Each bloom lasts for a day or so but if you plant in large clusters there is always a striking blaze of color. My neighbors ask about this one all of the time.

Summer Blooming. Just feed at the end of spring and end of summer with a good organic bulb fertilizer and water well in the heat of summer. People who walk by often comment on their beauty and ask me what they are. Enjoy!!

Comments about American Meadows Mexican Shellflower Bulbs:

Once planted you just water and wait. They will pop up and grow to about 24" tall or a bit higher and then start blooming. Sadly they would only bloom one or two a day so I never got the full effect, but they are nice to have right by the door so when you go out in the morning they are there to greet you with the speckeled centers and unique appearance. Keep them watered and they will come back.

                USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
