Description
This is far and away the most popular fall-flowering crocus, and here's why. In recent years, the spice, saffron, has become increasingly expensive, (often as high as $70 oz.) so more and more gardeners are growing their own. These beautiful purple crocus will open and offer you pure saffron on each flower's 'stigmas.' It's easy to harvest, and fresher than any you can buy.

Harvesting Saffron: When the flowers are fresh, simply remove the bright red stigmas you'll see in each flower's center; they carry the saffron spice. You can use it immediately in the fresh form, or dry it for later use. To dry your saffron, simply spread the red stigmas out for several days on a paper towel in a warm dry place. Once they're dry, store them in an air-tight container in a cool place, and use the saffron whenever you like.

Growing Fall-Flowering Crocus and Colchicum These two groups of bulbs are almost like magic. You plant them in late summer, and they bloom almost immediately. We ship them, along with Bearded Irises, in August, earlier than other fall bulbs, with instructions to plant right away. They're great in the ground or in patio pots---anywhere you want to add jewel-like color for your fall garden. In just days, you'll see them poking up through the ground, and before you know it they're in bloom, just when everything else in your garden is almost finished! It's a wonderful finale of color that just won't happen without these beauties.

If you've never planted them before, you'll find the regular 'fall-flowering crocus', including C. sativus,, the saffron crocus, much like spring bloomers (about 4-5 inches tall). Colchicums are different, since every bulb (they're larger than the regular crocus bulbs) produces a whole bouquet of flowers. One Colchicum bulb will send up between 5 and 10 stems, and each one will soon bear a flower.

So plant either or both, and enjoy some brilliant spring color in your garden when you need it the most--in fall!'

These are great for the Fall garden. At a time when all else ends I can still look forward to a last burst of color. I've never seen these around here and they grow with no effort. I planted these in late summer in Ohio and watered. They are beautiful and very easy to grow.

I planted some of the bulbs in ground as instructed and I was excited to see the plant growing, but only one flower bloomed and it quickly died.
I hoped some of the bulbs I put in containers would fair better but they didn't bloom at all. I guess my thumb isn't as green as I hoped. The plant looks like I planted chives, since it has no flowers. Maybe they will bloom next year.

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

I planted the bulbs right away, following the directions, but only got leaves with no blooms. Customer service was very nice, they sent another set of bulbs the next year which I planted and did get one bloom per bulb. I dried the saffron but have not cooked with it yet.
FYI: I planted 1/2 of the bulbs in a wire cage underground and the other half in pots. The only difference was the ones in the ground bloomed earlier, perhaps because they received more sun. The flowers are lovely! I'm very happy with the second set of bulbs but have no idea what happened the first year as I did everything the same.

I planted these as soon as I received them in the mail, in the middle of August. Not a single one came up out of the 15 bulbs. I read that others had the same problem... They must have had a dead batch.. I think I would like to take advantage of the guarantee.

As of 10-18-13 14 out of 15 bulbs have sprouted, not sure if they'll make it to bloom on the windowsill here in Chicago. Overall a good product for cheap.

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

I ordered my crocus bulbs quite early to assure receiving them in late August which was to my satisfaction. I planted them the day I received them in large pots as the weather here would be too cold in the dead of winter. Although they benefit from a large South facing window it's now early October and the bulbs are just now beginning to emerge. I can't testify to the flowering potential just yet because of the long wait time for growth. I have to say that all 15 have "sprouted" but it'll take a month until I can say anything more. I also note that about the time the bulbs were shipped they also went on sale so you might save a few bucks if you wait a bit longer to order.

Followed planting instructions, but nothing germinated. Disappointing. Did not have such problems with similar bulbs in the UK which continue to provide saffron. Had 2 sets, so 30 bulbs and no germination.

Planted 75 bulbs in 4 large 36 diameter pots to move to determine best sun exposure (first time growing), but unseason- ably high temperatures followed unusually wet weather have stunted plant growth with only 10% of 75 bulbs sprouting over 1 month after planing. Concerned now with potentials for frost before seeing blooms this year. Can add to this post if desired.

These came up reliably. I didn't realize that saffron crocus was fall-blooming, I think it would be better to plant them in spring. I planted them in fall and they sprouted and bloomed right after planting, but I think they would like to root and do their thing for a while before flowering.

I haven't tried cooking with the saffron yet, so I don't know about the flavor.

Comments about American Meadows Saffron Crocus Bulbs:

Saffron is very expensive to buy and we use a lot of saffron in a year in dishes like paella and most other Spanish cuisine. Growing my own has been fun, satisfying and inexpensive.
The purchased bulbs were big, plump and produced a crop the first year which isn't supposed to happen. I used large containers this first year but will plant more this fall directly in the garden soil. We live in high desert so saffron bulbs are perfect...harvest in fall, grow all winter with rains/snow, cold hardy to -10 Fahrenheit, and absolutely no water all hot/dry summer or bulbs rot....only start a little watering when bulbs start the late summer/fall shoot push leading to flowers and harvest.

American Meadows is a superb company to deal with. They send the bulbs when it is time to plant and immediately take care of any problems. One bag was short 4 bulbs so I wrote the company requesting 4 bulbs and they sent another bag of 15 with an apology. I will be ordering more bulbs for planting this fall

I ordered two packages of these and I planted them per the instructions that came with the bulbs in August of 2010, the day I received them. The plants won't sprout until there are freezing temperatures, so here in Tennessee it was nearly November before the first sprouts showed up. That first year I had sprouts, but no flowers.
This year, 2011, I had more plants sprouting but only 5 actual blooms (15 saffron threads). Not sure why it's taking so long to get a harvest from these but hopefully next year (the third year) I'll have enough saffron to save for winter-cooking.

Note, these are not spring flowers, rather bloom in Fall.

I planted 45 corms 4" deep and 2" apart in cactus/palm loamy soil in a raised bed with partial sun on September 15th; at last count I have 94 sprouts with pine needle-like leaves (Nov 2). I planted them deeper than American Meadows recommends because I researched how they cultivate saffron in Spain and figured it would be the same in San Diego.

The fact that most gardens are barren in late November makes the Saffron crocus a great idea, plus you get a year's worth of culinary spice right before the holidays.

Next year I'll need to build more raised beds, as Saffron corms multiply like garlic and I'll have hundreds.

                                                            Thank you American Meadows!

Of the 31 corms (bulbs) I planted, 30 have come up. Many of them have come up with multiple shoots, so I have 94 shoots that have come up. It's too early to tell if they'll flower this year, but a number of the strongest shoots are developing what appears to be the flower's stem.

I should note that based on my location (MN), these were planted in pots and moved indoors when it got cooler than the plants prefer. I have them under a grow light now, and contrary to what I have read, they seem to be thriving. It might not be worth the cost of the lights, but I'm certainly satisfied with the growth!

They reliably bloom every October, the blossoms before leaves. I harvest the stamens and dry them for storage and cooking. The bulbs are multiplying nicely and I should probably dig and reposition them. I tell friends I speak Spanish or Persian to them to make them feel at home.

Anyone can grow a crocus in Washington State - they bloom when everything else is either dormant, or eaten by critters. I was bummed that only three of them bloomed (yielding 9 saffron threads), and was looking forward to a more prolific growth this season, but none of them returned. I will stick to buying saffron at [...], where the price for already dried and harvested saffron is less expensive and disappointing than these saffron crocuses.

But last year, there was so much snow so early, I have no idea if they bloomed or not. After the snow melted in late April, there was substantial greenery, so I am sure they will be fine this year, weather permitting.

The tree I planted them around had to be removed so I dug them up and planted them along the driveway. They did beautifully even after being disturbed and continued to bloom through most of the winter. The leaves didn't die back until May.

I was looking forward to collecting saffron, but no blooms appeared.
The bulbs are still in the soil in my table top garden and as expected the tops have died off.
Can I expect blooms this year? The ground does not freeze in this area. Is that the problem?

                                                                                      How to Plant:
                                                                                      1. Plant bulbs as soon as possible after receiving them.
                                                                                      2. Read the label to see how deep to plant your crocus – This may vary for different varieties of bulbs.
                                                                                      3. Find a sunny spot in your garden that has good drainage – Crocus bulbs do not like very moist soil. You can also plant Fall Flowering Crocus in patio pots.
                                                                                      4. Dig a hole according to the depth on your package. Add organic compost if available.
                                                                                      5. Plant bulb pointy side up. Don’t worry if you can’t decipher which end this is – The flower will find its way up.
                                                                                      6. Back-fill with soil and water thoroughly to remove air pockets.

You should see sprouts within a week or so and blooms in just several weeks!

If you are planting Saffron Crocus bulbs to harvest the stamens to cook with, you will want to do this once they begin blooming.

Once they're dry, store them in an air-tight container in a cool, dark place, and use the saffron whenever you like.
