Daffodil Bulbs Comparison

What is a "Quality Bulb," and Why Does Bulb Quality Matter?

Flower bulbs come in a wide variety of sizes. It is important to get the largest, best quality bulbs you can find. Larger bulbs help to ensure success, producing larger and stronger plants with more flowers.

Several flower bulbs are part of the onion family, and because of this I like to use Onions as a representation of how important bulb size is. Which of the onions on your shelf go bad first? The smallest ones! Larger onions are more resilient, taking longer to dry out/rot and can withstand swings in temperature better. Flower bulbs are the same. Larger bulbs will withstand disease, draught, large amounts of moisture, and colder temperatures significantly better than the smaller ones.

Here at American Meadows we are committed to providing you with the highest quality bulbs. This means we do everything we can to source the largest bulbs possible. Below is a comparison of bulbs purchased from three different retail stores:

Each of the glass tubes contains 20 Dutch Master Daffodils. Starting from the left, the first tube is what is sold here at American Meadows, the middle tube was purchased at a local “Home Supply” box store, and the third is another online retailer. The difference is easily noticeable.

The next picture is the same comparison, but with Tulip Bulbs:

Again, our bulbs are quite a bit larger than other retailers.

Other things to be aware of when it comes to bulb quality is making sure they are firm and without signs of external damage or cracking. Do your best to avoid bulbs that are already growing and have shoots or freshly grown roots. This is difficult when purchasing online, but if you are ordering through a reputable company, they should be checking for these things regularly.

Next time you are looking to buy bulbs, think about how much time you put into planning and planting your garden and then anxiously waiting for your flowers to grow and bloom. Don’t be disappointed after all that effort by planting sub-par bulbs. Buy the largest, firmest, disease free bulbs you can afford, and you will have the best possible results.

Comments about American Meadows Double Late Tulip Bulbs Mix:

I am extremely happy with my Double Late Tulips. I ordered 2 bags of bulbs and planted them last fall. It was hard waiting all Winter, but now that they are in bloom and beautiful it was definitly worth the wait. I planted a bag on each side of my front walkway. All of them are up w/ buds and several in bloom except 1. That is the ONLY reason i gave 4 stars or it wouldve been 5. I can see them when i pull up to mu house and when im walking to my door. My neighbors have commented on how pretty they are. All the ones that are starting to bloom are white. After a few days most have pink streaks in them and are starting to turn pink. I dont know if that is how it is supose to happen but it looks really cool. Im still waiting on the darker ones to bloom as i am excited to see the combination of colors in these. I ordered this specific bag because i loved the combo of colors. I also feel like the price was really good, especially because they had a great bogo sale going on when i bough them. One bag would never have been enough of these beauties!! I will definitly be looking to American Meadows this fall for more tulip bulbs!

Comments about American Meadows Double Late Tulip Bulbs Mix:

The few that survived were gorgeous. Something, probably deer ate all the stalks down in one feeding. I don't live in a woodsy area so maybe it was another critter. I will try netting them next year. Guess I should stick with daffodils.

Comments about American Meadows Double Late Tulip Bulbs Mix:

These were the first tulips I have ever planted. They are gorgeous! I cut some of them because I wanted to be able to look at them all the time. They did something that I didn't know tulips did which was have more than one flower per plant. Is this normal?? Both the Angelique and the Lilac perfection had either one, two or three (!!) flowers per bulb. They look fantastic in my bud vases. The single flower ones were the biggest and when fully open are about the size of a tennis ball. LOVE these!

Comments about American Meadows Double Late Tulip Bulbs Mix:

The bulbs are very large and healthy. I planted them in a ribbon through a row of roses bordering my driveway. They were the first plants to arrive with the warm weather this spring and boy did they put on a show. They are also lightly fragrant and that was a wonderful bonus. I cut some and placed them in my living room and the bloom lasted seven days inside. Some bulbs were so healthy that they produced additional plants this spring and that will allow me to spread the love to more of my yard.

These are effortless—just plant as instructed in the fall and you will be rewarded with divinely fragrant tulips that resemble peonies in their fullness. The palest ones are white laced with pink; the darkest are a deep purple crimson...all of them, spectacular! I can't wait for next year, to watch all over again!

                    USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                    • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                    • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
