Plant Information

These are the most treasured, most perennial tulips of all. Plant them once, and you'll have them for years. They are also tall, tough, and have some of the biggest, most luscious flowers of all tulips.

Now, make no mistake: no tulip is as dependably perennial as a daffodil. But the Darwin Hybrids are the ones most bulb growers call "perennial." This means they'll return for several years, especially if you remove the fading flowers each spring. While naturalized daffodils are "forever", many homeowners report their Darwin Hybrid tulips are still faithfully returning after 6 to 10 seasons. For their inexpensive price, we think that's a beautiful bargain. Here's the story:

About Darwin Hybrid Tulips: Early in the 20th Century, a talented Dutch hybridizer named Lefeber worked long and hard with a wild tulip called "Tulipa fosteriana" from Central Asia. It is red, and from it, he hybridized the group that became known as the Emperor Tulips. The world-famous Red Emperor was introduced in 1931, and is what we now call a member of the "Fosteriana Tulip" group. In fact, Red Emperor's official variety name is "Madame Lefeber" in honor of the original hybridizer's wife.

Even though the Red Emperor and other fosterianas were instant sensations, the hybridizers were not satisfied. They were fascinated by what were then called simply "Darwin Tulips". These were large-flowered tulips in clear colors on tall stems, but without any perennial qualities. The Emperors, being close to a wild species, were quite perennial, so they crossed the two groups. And voila! Darwin Hybrid Tulips were born, with the best qualities of both groups.

Ever since, the Darwin Hybrids have set the standards worldwide for tall graceful, large flowered perennial tulips. The famous Apeldoorn group was introduced in 1951 by D. W. Lefeber and Company. There are not many Darwin Hybrids, even today. But they are every good gardener's favorites and always highly valued by florists.

In America's Top Ten list for popularity in the US, compiled by the Netherlands Flower Bulb Information Centre, they list no less than three Darwin Hybrids, more than from any other group.

Daffodil Bulbs Comparison

What is a "Quality Bulb," and Why Does Bulb Quality Matter?

Flower bulbs come in a wide variety of sizes. It is important to get the largest, best quality bulbs you can find. Larger bulbs help to ensure success, producing larger and stronger plants with more flowers.

Several flower bulbs are part of the onion family, and because of this I like to use Onions as a representation of how important bulb size is. Which of the onions on your shelf go bad first? The smallest ones! Larger onions are more resilient, taking longer to dry out/rot and can withstand swings in temperature better. Flower bulbs are the same. Larger bulbs will withstand disease, draught, large amounts of moisture, and colder temperatures significantly better than the smaller ones.

Here at American Meadows we are committed to providing you with the highest quality bulbs. This means we do everything we can to source the largest bulbs possible. Below is a comparison of bulbs purchased from three different retail stores:

Each of the glass tubes contains 20 Dutch Master Daffodils. Starting from the left, the first tube is what is sold here at American Meadows, the middle tube was purchased at a local “Home Supply” box store, and the third is another online retailer. The difference is easily noticeable.

The next picture is the same comparison, but with Tulip Bulbs:

Again, our bulbs are quite a bit larger than other retailers.

Other things to be aware of when it comes to bulb quality is making sure they are firm and without signs of external damage or cracking. Do your best to avoid bulbs that are already growing and have shoots or freshly grown roots. This is difficult when purchasing online, but if you are ordering through a reputable company, they should be checking for these things regularly.

Next time you are looking to buy bulbs, think about how much time you put into planning and planting your garden and then anxiously waiting for your flowers to grow and bloom. Don’t be disappointed after all that effort by planting sub-par bulbs. Buy the largest, firmest, disease free bulbs you can afford, and you will have the best possible results.

I purchased this product for planting in the fall of 2008 so that the tulips would appear in spring of 2009. When the tulips opened they were tall, beautiful and colorful. It's now spring 2010 and the tulips are returning! I was only expecting one season as I have been told so many times that tulips do not come back the following year. When the flowers started popping up again this spring, I was very surprised. This was a great purchase. The flowers make us smile, and the neighbors also have commented on how nice they are. The only thing I noticed this year that is different from last is that the tulips are a little bit smaller. This is most likely because I didn't bother to fertilize the area where they are growing. If you are planning on purchasing the Darwin Tulips, I'd suggest fertilizing to keep them consistently hardy and large. Overall this is a good product and I'd recommend to anyone who wants tulips in the garden.

two out 100 grew, but neither produced a flower. However, I bought 90 bulbs from [...], which all grew. Customer service asked me if I wanted replacement or refund. I took replacements and asked for a bag of the larger 50 Darwin Hybrids, but I received two bags of 50 of the same smaller ones [clearly marked as the same product on the label, by the same company, just in a bag of 50 instead of 100]. I planted them any way, but planted some [...] bulbs behind them. This time, half grew, but only a few had flowers. However, less than 50% of those from [...] purchased the year before, grew back. I'll stick with Hyacinths next time. They grew back and divided as well.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Darwin Tulip Bulbs Grand Mix:

We planted 20 bulbs last fall, followed the instructions tat came with the product throughly. We were eagerly looking forward to the blooms this spring. To our surprise not all the bulbs bloomed. Only 5 out of 20 were successful! Of the ones that failed, for some we saw only leaves and no flowers while others did not even sprout. The ones that bloomed were pretty but very disappointed with the success rate.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Darwin Tulip Bulbs Grand Mix:

I planted 20 bulbs in my garden last fall. We were really hopeful and waiting to see the flowers bloom. We were surprised to see only 5 flowers bloom out of the 20..even though I followed steps as per the instructions. Some bulbs did not even sprout..... while in case of others, just the leaves no flower.
The 5 that bloomed where attractive but the 25% success rate is very disappointing (especially considering the price).
What hurts is the fact that some of the cheap bulbs we bought from a department store had a higher success rate.

We used the tulips to dress up our entry way to the house and we were not disappointed. The variety of colors is excellent and the flowers are large. Brings a smile to my face every time I go out or come in past our two tulip beds. I have been taking pictures to document their growth so we can put together a collage for our grandkids who have been following the growth of the flowers from the time they poked out of the ground.

Comments about American Meadows Perennial Darwin Tulip Bulbs Grand Mix:

I planted these in containers (planted lasagna style) and in my front borders between some young evergreens. The flowers are gigantic (roughly 4" bloom) and vibrant - the neighbors slow down to look at them when they drive by!

Also, these are super easy to grow - really high quality. Even more unbelievable, I actually planted a bunch of them in March that I failed to get into the ground in fall. I had stored them, hung in their net bags, in my unheated garage and although I lost a few to mold (to be expected), I planted the rest just to see if they would do anything. Well, I'll be darned if they didn't sprout like gangbusters - any bulb that can take that ill treatment and still perform has my vote.

Try these - you won't be disappointed.

I planted these bulbs a little late, so I was not sure if they would come up this year. They did! Not only did they come up, but the blooms were HUGE and the colors are gorgeous. I am very happy with these bulbs.

I have ordered these bulbs for three years and each year the quality is poorer. I plant them in different areas and follow the directions precisely, but this year, only about half of the bulbs came up and the plants are very small, with smaller blooms and poor quality plants.

I guess of all the hundred of $ I spend. This product is the only one that did show up (some. Not all bulbs yield a tulip) But in comparison with all the others types of Wild Flower seed that I bought, I should be happy that some of the tulips did show up above the ground.
Please when you read this and all the others coments. Call me. I believe that your slogan is where confidence grows... I guess confidence is the only thing that grows, no flowers that i Can account for. Oh, well maybe in someone else yard they are growing. Maybe I just got the death seeds.

You can plant the bulbs in the fall and just wait for spring to arrive for the beautiful tulips to emerge. My neighbors enjoy them as much as I do!

Our home was the talk of the neighborhood this Spring!! I planted almost 500 of them in clumps of 9-10 bulbs throughout our landscape gardens. They were absolutely gorgeous and everyone commented on them. My granddaughter was thrilled to cut some and bring them to her teacher. Colors were beautiful and really "popped". We were all sad to see them die down but look forward to next Spring to see how well they do then.

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
