USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Reverse of each packet includes the heading “Easy-to-Grow Vegetables” and the following copy: “This packet contains Marketmore Cucumber seeds. These seeds will produce large, tasty Cucumbers in 55-70 days after planting. For further helpful planting tips, or to learn more about all the other great gardening products we offer, visit us at AmericanMeadows.com”

Below this is a planting chart with the following planting instructions: “When and where to plant: Select a sunny, well-drained location and sow after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Loosen soil, mix in some compost, then rake soil into flat-topped mounds about 2’ in diameter and 4-6’ apart (closer if you’re training vines to a trellis). Plant 6-8 seeds per hill at recommended depth, firm soil over seeds and keep seedbed moist. For an earlier crop, start seeds indoors 3-4 weeks before planting outdoors.”

Standard packet size is 3 1/4" wide x 4 1/2" tall. Standard packets are extremely light – add them to any mailing with no additional postage required.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
