Reverse of each packet includes the heading “Easy-to-Grow Vegetables” and the following copy: “This packet contains Beefsteak Tomato seeds. These seeds will produce large, tasty Tomatoes in 90-100 days after planting. For further helpful planting tips, or to learn more about all the other great gardening products we offer, visit us at AmericanMeadows.com”

Below this is a planting chart with the following planting instructions: “When and where to plant: For an early crop, start seeds indoors in pots or flats 5-7 weeks before planting outdoors. Transplant to a sunny, well-drained location once all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed. Prepare bed by loosening soil, mixing in some compost, and raking smooth.”

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
