Plant Information

Who says you cant have color in the shade? With this special mixture of shade-tolerant flowers, you can. Close to buildings, under high branches, at the edge of the lawn-anyplace that's too shady for a regular flower garden, but has some sun each day-at least four hours. And what a garden it is-20 different flowers in a rainbow of hues. And bloom begins just a few weeks after planting. Annuals bloom your first year, perennials the second-and then return each season with more and more blooms.

How to Plant your Shady Garden: Plant in spring after frosts, during summer, or in fall after growing season ends. Clear area of all existing growth, and till or loosen soil. Then scatter seed mix evenly and compress soil. Do not cover. Water carefully, and keep moist until seedlings are about 10" tall. Annuals bloom first year; perennials and biennials the second and successive years, forming larger and larger clumps.

Flowers Included: Net Wt. 1 ounce is 65% inert matter as a sowing aid, and 35% flower seed. Over 10,000 seeds in all. The following flowers are included at 5% or less:
Chinese Forget-Me-Not, Baby's Breath (Gyp. elegans), Multicolored cornflower, Siberian Wallflower, Dame's Rocket, Rose Mallow, Four O'Clock, Gloriosa Daisy, Evening Primrose, Chinese Houses, Lanceleaf Coreopsis, Sweet William, Foxglove, Purple Echinacea, California Poppy, Baby Snapdragon, Scarlet Flax, Baby Blue Eyes, Red Poppy Mix, None-so-Pretty.

Comments about American Meadows Shady Flower Garden Jumbo Packet:

I've tried other mixes with little or no results. I opened the packet, sprinkled it on the ground and added water. Everyday is a new adventure seeing what has grown, what has sprouted and what flowers opened up to a new day.

Comments about American Meadows Shady Flower Garden Jumbo Packet:

I used this seed mixture in California and Colorado in areas heavily shaded by large trees. I had a very good crop of colorful flowers where i had trouble growing much else. The good thing was that it didn't require much work on my part.

              USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

              • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
              • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
