USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

A vigorous vine, this Hardy Kiwi plant is easy to grow and produces grape-size fruits that hang in bunches. The small fruits can be eaten out of the hand without peeling and have an excellent flavor. Be sure to provide support for the vine to grow. This is a female variety and should be planted with the male (Meader) for fruit production. (Actinidia)

Plant Information

Actinidia, or Hardy Kiwi, prefers dry soil and will tolerate full sun to partial shade. For every nine female plants you plant, be sure to plant at least one male. The vines produce small white flowers in the early summer, followed by the greenish-yellow fruits in the late summer and into the fall. Be sure to provide support for the large vine and prune regularly, cutting back non-flowering parts. To harvest the Kiwifruit, wait until the late autumn.

Comments about American Meadows Hardy Kiwi Anna - Female Plant:

I bought this kiwi for my Dad, he had bought one at local store but didn't realize he needed an opposite companion for it to produce. It was wonderful that I could get it from AM. I have seen the plant and it looks healthy and it is thriving close to it's companion. Will wait for next year or two to see what they produce.

      Q & A

      Plant With These:

      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
