This classic pole bean produces a huge harvest of straight, stringless beans all summer long.

Zones 1 - 10

Plant Information

An old fashioned favorite, "Kentucky Wonder" is what some experts say is the American name for the classic "runner bean." That tells you it'll be a strong pole or fence-growing vine with great green pods to harvest right into fall.

When and Where to Plant: Select sunny location and plant when all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed. For best results, loosen soil with spade or fork, fertilize with vegetable food and smooth with rake. Firm soil over seed and keep moist.
Care: Support pole beans with stout poles, trellis, string, or wire. Water by soaking soil, to reduce danger of disease.
Harvesting: Pick regularly when pods are 4-6"/10-15 cm., before sides bulge.

Comments about American Meadows Heirloom Kentucky Wonder Bean Seeds:

These plants are large and produce large quantities of good sized beans. I mistakenly planted them around a fairly small trellis (only ~3 ft. tall) and it's completely overrun by them. Very happy.

Comments about American Meadows Heirloom Kentucky Wonder Bean Seeds:

I planted these beans just for fun and ended up having to freeze a ton of beans! They happen to be tasty and stringless, too.

Comments about American Meadows Heirloom Kentucky Wonder Bean Seeds:

These seeds came as a freebie with some flower bulbs this spring. I figured, why not, and set up a bamboo trellis. The first batch I planted didn't seem to take. Two weeks went by with no sprouts, so I planted a second round. Oops! Too many beans! We're eating them as fast as we can but they just make more!
As to the beans themselves, picked young they are very tender with a hearty, slightly sweet flavor, excellent for stir fry! As soon as they're a little bigger, take care to de-string, since they get tough. Sweet flavorful, and VERY abundant.

        USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

        • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
        • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
