Plant Information

Here's one of the expert perennial gardeners secrets. This little-known plant is a must-have perennial. It is a close hybrid of the native species, but much better. Best of all, it adds big color to a border or meadow for months, not just a couple of weeks. Unlike many others, the big golden double flowers (3 to 4 in. across) keep coming and coming, especially if you remove the fading ones.

The common name isn't really correct either, since it suggests tall gangly sunflowers. This plant is not very tall, usually just 3 ft. or so, and the flowers are large and a beautiful rich gold in color, much more like an award-winning chrysanthemum than a sunflower.

This is one of my top 10 favorite perennials, a great colormaker wherever it grows.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
