USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Honey Bees and Colony Collapse Disorder

What if you couldn't grow your favorite perennials, spring or fall bulbs? You couldn't sow your favorite wildflower seeds?

Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD) has killed off one in three honey bee colonies nationwide in the last three years. While most of the press surrounding Colony Collapse Disorder relates to its impact on our food supply, the gardening community also faces a serious threat from this uncured honey bee ailment.

American Meadows shares your concern about CCD and we have provided some resources below that show our commitment to the environment upon which gardeners depend so much. We've also placed a special order for our custom 'Honey Bee Mix' Wildflower Seed Mix. This is not an incurable disorder. Scientists have made great strides in identifying the causes of this alarming disappearance.

An informative piece from PBS's 'Nature' about Honey Bees:

How you can help:

  • Donate to the Honey Bee Research Fund at The University of California at Davis
  • Plant a bee friendly garden. Although all gardens are bee friendly, but you can select plants with long blooming seasons, group bee friendly plants together in your garden, provide water sources for bees, or simply buy our special 'Honey Bee Mix'!
  • Help our friend, the honey bee, and ensure that our food supply and your gardening enjoyment are preserved for the future!
