Plant Information

The Woodfern group is particularly useful to gardeners for two reasons. First, like Christmas Fern, this somewhat larger species (to 30") has evergreen fronds, with a rich blue-green color and ample substance to make them last right through frosts.

Secondly, the plant creates a particularly elegant effect, since unlike others, this ferns fronds rise like a bouquet from a small exposed rootstock that serves as a small trunk for the plant, which is formed more like a small tree fern or palm tree. Best of all, this one is not at all picky about soil, perfectly happy in any woodsy soil, acid or alkaline.

Comments about American Meadows Marginal Woodfern:

Last year (Aug 2015) I ordered, received and planted 3 maidenhair and 3 marginal woodffern per planting instuctions, i.e., plant root up 1 inch below soil line. I live in Philadelphia, PA. It is now Aapril 24, 2016. I do not know if the roots died over the winter or am I being inpatient, because they have not appeared. The other items I purchased worked out fine.

Comments about American Meadows Marginal Woodfern:

I bought several roots in the fall. Half I planted
in the ground the other's I put in a pot. The ones
planted in the ground are doing very well. The ones
in the pot are coming up but not as strong as the
      others.

Not sure about planting instructions - I planted them at correct depth. two have started to grow fronds. One I have not been able to find eventhough I did mark where I planted it. It may have died during winter:-(

          USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

          • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
          • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
