USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold-hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).

A Problem Roadside is a Problem No More

Dear American Meadows.com:

We had no luck with grass for years, so tried your Wildflowers . Since they began bloom around Memorial Day, we have met more neighbors and people who take walks in our neighborhood due to this gorgeous wildflower display. Cars will speed by, back up, point and wait awhile before moving on. It's like we share their beauty and pleasure with everyone who wanders by!

Planting the seeds was so simple it's almost embarrassing to take credit for their beauty. My husband, who wanted to till it all under, now proudly smiles when people compliment "his" meadow lawn!

No matter how many photos I take, they don't do justice to seeing the real thing!

Sincerely,

Gary and Joanne Schaefer
