You do need to follow the directions when scattering the seed, especially if doing a large amount. Don't think you know better than they do. I have a lovely bank of flowers that is thick on one end and more weedy on the other because it is difficult to sow the seeds evenly by hand over a large area. But even with that it is a lovely bank that always wins compliments and doesn't take any work except mowing once in the fall. This spring I will landscape a much larger hillside that was prepared last fall with the NE wildflower mix. This time I am including some annuals to bloom the first summer. I can mow it once in the fall which will prevent brush and trees from growing back, preserving my view with the added benefit of having a beautiful hillside of wildflowers all summer. They start blooming in early summer and continue til fall. By cutting back on lawn I am saving fuel, time and cutting pollution all summer.

Overall this mix has some absoluitely BEAUTIFUL flowers. Unfortunately, they either get washed out in the overabundance of baby's breath in the spring, which the bee's LOVED or buried by the growth of the taller flower's throughout the summer. Most dissapointing was the Wild Cosmos; first of all, American Meadows needs to correct their height in this mix, they ended well over the 47" stated here and much closer to the 72" listed in the Landscaper's Big Blooms mix. This posed two problems, they dwarfed and obscured many of the shorter flowers throughtout the summer, as they are a very "bushy" plant with lots of fine leaves and then just looked unkempt come late summer at 5-6 feet tall. I'll either be shopping for a mix with a more uniform flower height or building my own. I was looking for a natural meadow look and I probably only got it for a week or two after the baby's breath ran it's course and before the taller flowers grew past 36".

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I planted my wildflower mix in November after our first heavy frost, as directed. However because of the unprecedented warm weather in Vermont my seed germinated....I assume that the annuals will not germinate in the spring but hopefully I will have the enjoyment of the perennials. I will probably overseed in the spring with annuals. When planting, I mixed the seed with sand as directed and that worked well. I look forward to the spring and my flowers. Next time I will plant in December!

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I used the same mix a couple of years ago and was stunned by the color, mix and continued blooming for five years. I recultivated the plot and tried again but the second time I didn't get the same result. The germination rate seemed less that before. I may try again after seeing what comes up next year.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

Planted this mix on a newly graded dirt roadside next to my driveway. Because the new road material that the town used was only gravel, I augmented the gravel with commercial compost. Broadcast the seed in the late spring. Because this was on a fairly steep bank, I covered the seed very lightly with landscaping straw in order to protect the seed from heavy rains. Well, it all came together very nicely. Lots of flowers by early summer and still blooming beautifily. This spot only gets about 3-4 hours of sun a day.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

Got to say, what a beautful bundle. My wildflower garden is located right out front where my farmers porch is, wow the questions I get. They are just do beautful,I planted them in the spring this year in with some perennials I already had in my flower bed. I live were the weeds are so hard to control and this has made so much enjoyable. I also planted them for the honey bees and such for my vegetable garden that to has blossomed very well this year. I am excited to see what next year brings for this year I see mostly annuals. What a treat, great for a country or cottage look/feel.

I was very skeptical about succeeding in my effort to start growing wildflowers in my garden. I am a true novice. After speaking with a very helpful person at American Meadows by phone, I decided to try this mix, I literally just tossed the seeds on the ground. I am surprised and delighted by the number of beautiful wildflowers in my garden-Highly recommend this mix. And I'll be buying more for the coming season.

The first to bloom were the Baby Blue Eyes, then Baby's Breath, then Siberian Wallflower, California Poppy, and Red Poppy. They are just getting started since it is the first week of June but I am looking forward to an increased variety as time goes on. I love how the mix will produce all different flowers from late spring to fall. The flowers appear to be so delicate yet the plants seem so sturdy.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I wasn't able to prepare the area as recommended, or as I would have liked. A neighbor was supposed to till a large area for me, and kept putting me off well into the winter, so I had to take matters into my own hands, using my tractor to "rough up" the heavy, thick grass and then broadcast the seeds. My biggest problem is that I wasn't able to get all the grass broken up, and in some places there are too many seeds sprouting too close together. However, the results are fabulous, with new types of flowers opening every few days, and literaly hundreds of new blooms each day!

I wanted to plant a meadow of plants native to my area, and found these. The flower selection is very beautiful, but there is one glaring flaw: upon further research I discovered many of the species included are native to Europe, and have been introduced to North America. These mixtures are falsely advertised as native, when someone interested in restoring North America's native flora should stay away from this brand.

This is the second time in 15 years that we did some major landscaping that required a large planting area to eliminate erosion and add beauty to the property. This wildflower mix is an excellent option for attracting bees, butterflies and hummingbirds and offering a "no mow" solution with cut flowers for many months. What a fabulous array of color and variety! Friends have come to pick bouquets of wildflowers and have raved about the plentiful blooms. This mix is the perfect background to the new solar array! Thank you!

Prep your soil - grew great where I did, but spotty on bad soil
Planted in Spring - hoping next year that growth returns & improves

This is my second year of using these seed mix. I spread the seeds on a sunny hill and this is the second year of beautiful blooming flowers. Bees and butterflies love this mix too.

We have used this mix twice now and both time got excellent results. My only complaint is that that both times we got loads of yellow flowers the second year but not much else.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

After years of unsuccessfully trying to keep the deer out of a day lily garden, I emptied out this large space and planted a wild flower garden- something I've always wanted to do. The result was a summer of ever changing and vibrant colors. The garden seemed to change daily. It was the most popular site for Monarchs and other butterflies. It was a place of peace and beauty. The only down side was controlling weed grass without stomping on my blooms. They got a bit out of control because I wasn't sure at first if the were weed or flower. Highly recommend if you hae the space.

I use the mix to cover a downward slope which opens up to a view to the East. It adds color and beauty to the scene. As mentioned above, the taller blooms block out the shorter flowers. I've been using the mix for several years now and plan to continue.

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I sowed these seeds very early spring in direct sun and they did great with little watering.
The first year each month the seeds produced different colors. The spring was white, sumer pink fall yellow. This was such an added benefit however the second year the Black Eyed Susan's took over and I lost the majority of the other flowers. If you like a field of Black Eyed Susans there's no problem but now I need to kill them off (which I hate to do) and start over again. I do like this product and it performed very well but maybe to well.

This is my first season with he northeast wildflower mix it has been in constant bloom with a great mix of colors. It's been interesting to see what's blooming next. This year I started with a small 100 sq ft area to see how i liked it. i plan on quadrupling the size next year.

We chose these seeds to provide color and flowers to our meadow for our wedding. We rototilled large swaths of the meadow in specific areas for color. The seeds are only now starting to bloom. We have a lot of chickweed, which only blooms on a sunny day until 10:00am then looks very weedy with thick stems. I am hopeful that the blooms will increase for a September Wedding.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for to liven up my boring row of arbor vitae. The wildflowers are spectacular; very colorful and so eye-catching. Love, love, love them. I am going to order more for the front. They arrived very quickly.

I expected to see wildflowers all over the place. Instead, I didn't see any that weren't already growing naturally (like Brown Betties).

Comments about American Meadows Northeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

The area for planting was formerly grass, so I tilled in Fall and raked-out as many clumps as I could before broadcasting the seeds and walking over the seed to secure growth.

The first growth appeared as soon as frosts were no longer an issue and flowers as tall as six feet towered in the first season. It was an absolute magnet for Bees, Butterflies & Hummingbirds. This year (obviously) different blooms dominate including Black-eyed Susan & Coneflower but (and this is the reason for the four stars) there is a heck of a lot of Smartweed which has sprouted between the Northeast Wildflower Mix.

I appreciate American Meadows cannot be held responsible for weed growth but I had expected a more dense burgeoning flower population in subsequent years, which would have restricted weed growth.

Overall though, it was an exciting project to create the wildflower area and one which (despite the weeds) continues to surprise each year with differing blooms and attending wildlife.

I used the wildflower mix to seed a large area of meadow that was created from bare earth and there was a potential for erosion. The seeds established quickly and grew and I experienced very little erosion damage on the slope. Plants have grown vigorously and I am looking forward to seeing the final product.

I spend a long hot day in Spring tilling the soil and removing as much of the grass as was reasonable and then a few hours the next day raking and sowing the seed. The return on this very enjoyable weekend has been immesuarable the flowers keep going and going and changing with the seasons.

I also did a quick calculation on the number of flowers I have in the border and for the cost of a $10 bag of wildflower seed I have well over a $1000 dollars of plants (if I were to buy them one by one in the garden centre).

We had a large open area by the road that I wanted to fill with low maintenance blooms. In June of last year, we killed all the growth and then spread the seed using a walk behind seed spreader. However - more grass grew in, competing with the flowers. We ended up buying grass killer and did one application: it worked great and didn't seem to harm the wildflowers. There wasn't any blooms early this spring but now there are several different varieties popping up everywhere! I expect to see even more color next year.

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
