Organic Jack O'Lantern Pumpkins: This one's great for Halloween fun. Your pumpkins will be up to a foot in diameter and about 15 pounds. Great carving and roasting pumpkin.

For normal-sized pumpkins for fall fun, this is the one. This one's not only famous for carving; it's also famous for making delicious pies.

When and Where to Plant: Tender Annual. Direct sow or start indoors 4 weeks before frost date. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 85-95ºF. Row spacing is 5-6’. The more crowded the greater number of pumpkins, but smaller sized. Plant outdoors after danger of all frost has passed. Black plastic mulch and floating row cover can be used to increase soil and air temps, as well as ward off cucumber beetles. Harvest before hard frost.

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
