USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

ORGANIC: A newer hybrid of super-sweet white corn that many consider the sweetest ever. Thick 8" ears.

Zones 1 - 10
Mature Plant Size Up to 72" tall (6 feet)

Plant Information

New "Sugar Pearl's" white, sweet kernals look perfect on the cobb and melt in your mouth. Block ears have distinct rows with good tip cover. 6' plants bear ears lower than most, making harvest easier.

When and Where to Plant: Tender Annual. Sow seed after all danger of frost has passed. Optimal soil temperature is 55ºF or higher (critical for good germination). Blocks of at least 4 rows 24" apart are needed for adequate pollination. Can also be started as transplants 3-4 weeks before planting date. Harvest when ear silks are dried and kernels are full to the tip. Soil should be fertilized with compost in spring, at about knee high and again when corn silks are first visible for optimal growth.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
