USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

Plant Information

Sweet Basil is the one that's great for pesto! This is the traditional large-leaf variety that's tender, aromatic, and mild-flavored. Great for fresh use and drying. Preferred culinary variety.

When and Where to Plant: Tender Annual. Direct sow seeds after danger of frost has passed or start transplants 4-6 weeks before planting date. Optimal soil temperature for germination is 70-90°F. Most pungent when fresh. Best time to harvest is just as the plant starts to bud, before flower's mature. This heat loving plant requires a good amount of moisture.

Q & A

Plant With These:

USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

  • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
  • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
