Description

This great collection, which comes with complete instructions, will give you a true rainbow of surefire color with almost no work. Simply pop the easy-to-plant bulbs into your flower garden after spring frosts are done...wherever you want brilliant bloom in mid-summer. One of the beauties of glads is that they take really no space; just stick them in between other plants, and they'll grow right up through leaves of neighboring plants. For knockout arrangements, simply plant another bag in the cutting garden. All you do is plant them, and keep them watered. They bloom almost like magic, you'll love all the fantastic colors, and your neighbors are sure to be jealous!

Gladiolus DetailsGrowing Gladiolus (See Combination Photo): Everyone knows gladiolus, but not every gardener knows how easy they are to grow. The original "glad" was a wildflower from South Africa called "sword lily", which was imported into Europe in the 1840's. As with almost every other bulb, the Dutch went to work and created a grand rainbow from a quite lowly flower.

Photo A shows many of the beautiful bi-colors we have today thanks to Holland's wildly successful hybridizers.

Photo B not only shows an example of the glowing colors now available, but also the beautiful form of the individual florets, often compared to an iris or orchid.

Photo C shows stately white "glads" in the garden. This picture is a great illustration of how to plant the bulbs. Put them close together so you'll end up with a mass of color, not just a stick here and there. One of the things that makes growing gladiolus so easy is that the plants take almost no space. You can easily pop in the bulbs between other more permanent plants. Just find the spaces in your garden, put in the bulbs in tight groups wherever you can, and you'll know that in a few weeks, those spots will be glowing towers of color.

And of course, everyone knows gladiolus are great in a vase. So be sure to plant plenty where you can cut them. They're inexpensive, and few other flowers give you so much color for the cost. When frost threatens, you can just forget them, and buy new ones in spring, or dig up the bulbs and store them until the following spring. Don't hesitate. Enjoy gladiolus this summer. You can't have too many.

This was my first experience actually planting gladiolus, and I'm wowed by how easy this mix was to plant and how gorgeous the results are. No trying to color match or figure out "what goes where"- I just planted them all over the place, threw few handfuls of "Summer Splash" wildflower mix over the top and then mostly ignored them. We had a cold summer, so they were VERY slow to get started, but now that they're blooming, I'm really wowed by the colors.

The only problem I've had is that some of them seem to be more vulnerable to pests than others. The huge pink and white variegated doesn't have a single nibble on it and was the first to bloom, while a few others have been so gnawed up and down by the katydids that I doubt they'll bloom at all.

If anyone knows actual name of the pink & white variegated glads that are in this mix, I'd love to plant a couple dozen of those next year! The katydids seem to leave them alone and the blossoms are to die for.

I can't understand it, because I've successfully planted gladioli many times over the years. I live on Long Island, and have always seen profuse bloom when planting them. It's possible that the site or the soil was unfavorable, but for whatever reason, I didn't see one flower all summer long. Everything else I planted in my garden did well. I planted the glads in groups over a period of weeks starting in early May. We did have a wet spring, but the soil here drains well. The leaves came up at the appropriate time and looked healthy --- they're still there. But not one produced any flowers. Sorry I can't post a favorable comment, but would appreciate your input on what could have caused this problem.

These were beautiful! I planted them in two locations, and they added a huge splash of color. The glads were vivid orange, yellow, and reds, and everyone commented on how pretty they were. The blooms lasted a long time and would have done so much better had we not had over 70 days of 100 degree tmeperatures. The bulbs were healthy and shipped when promised, and the flowers so easy to care for. American Meadows is the best!

The bulbs were in excellant condition, I counted them many days in a row as as each one came up through the surface. With palnting the 100 bulbs in a mass planting the colors were beautiful during their bloom time that lasted a good while. Of course the draw back for me is I should dig them up each year in my zone.

Disappointing performance, about 40% actually bloomed even though planted in the same area/soil/sun.

Colors were very light pastel. Expected something more vibrant.

I enjoy gardening very much, the plants came in good condition, very well packed. I was pleased to see 3 extra packets of beautiful flowers and 10 percent of my next purchase. The card describing planting along with the booklet was very helpful. I look forward to seeing my plants come up every year.

I ordered several hundred bulbs to decorate my wedding during the 50% off spring sale. I was on a budget and wanted fresh flowers, but I am not exactly artistic in putting together bouquets. These flowers look amazing in simple vases and were my perfect solution. The best news is that these bulbs just get better over time! Next season I will have another batch of my favorite flowers!

These hearty flowers flank the stone columns around my patio. The color is long lasting and attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. They have not required bringing the bulb inside for the winter, but return year after year. They float in the breeze, attracting more attention. As an added bonus, they look beautiful on my dining room table making a great cut flower.

I bought this mixture, along with a few bags of corms from local stores. None of the store bought Glads grew, but the ones from American Meadows ALL came up. They were gorgeous, and won awards at the local county fair.

Us vs. The Big Box Store: Gladiolus Bulbs

Gladiolus Bulb ComparisonEach season, we head over to the big box store in our area and choose several Bulbs, Plants and Seeds to compare against our selection. This spring, we purchased 50 Gladiolus Bulbs to compare and the difference is quite revealing.

I’d like to start out by mentioning the difference in shopping experiences. I walked into the big box store and headed straight to the back, where I knew the garden section was. I walked through aisles of grills, patio sets and annual hanging baskets until I found someone to speak with. They quickly answered the phone and I waited several more minutes until I could ask, "Do you know where the Gladiolus Bulbs are?" They weren’t sure what I meant and finally an entire wall of Summer-Blooming Bulbs caught my eye. I chose their "Gladiolus Mix" bag of 50, which most resembled our Gladiolus Rainbow Mix, which we also carry in a bag of 50 bulbs.

When you shop on our site, we have a wealth of information on growing and caring for Gladiolus at your fingertips, as well as an extremely helpful and knowledgeable garden staff, several of which are certified Master Gardeners. This photo also helps to show the true difference between us and the Big Box Stores. Brian, one of our employees and garden-enthusiasts helps to explain why a bigger flower bulb is better.

"Several flower bulbs are part of the onion family, and because of this I like to use Onions as a representation of how important bulb size is. Which of the onions on your shelf go bad first? The smallest ones! Larger onions are more resilient, taking longer to dry out/rot and can withstand swings in temperature better. Flower bulbs are the same. Larger bulbs will withstand disease, draught, large amounts of moisture, and colder temperatures significantly better than the smaller ones. They also produce taller growth and larger blooms."

With American Meadows, you’re not only getting access to our thirty years of gardening experience, but are also receiving the largest, highest-quality bulbs available, inevitably producing larger, healthier blooms in your garden. Happy Gardening!
