Description

Here's the most famous amaryllis of them all. Recommended by the Netherlands Flower Bulb Centre as one of the foolproof varieties. Red Lion is enjoyed by more Americans for winter bloom than any other bulb.

Amaryllis How-To: Ever grown an amaryllis inside the house? It's a snap. There can be rain, cold or snow outside, but all you do is plant the bulb in a pot, water this "magic lily", and it zooms into growth. In just a few days, the stems arise, and in a few weeks the enormous flowers begin to open--huge lily blooms up to 8" across! (Each bulb produces one or two stems, each with 3 or 4 flowers!) Then you have the big show for over a month.

Planting Amaryllis: Choose a standard size flower pot, so the large bulb has approx. 1" around sides and at bottom. (These bulbs do not need much root space.) Use soil, or a mixture of soil, peat and perlite. (Do not use pine bark.) Place bulb so top inch or so of bulb sticks up out of the soil.

Watering:Water sparingly until the sprout is well out of the bulb. When first planted, place pot in sunny window, and add "bottom heat" if possible. Many do this by placing pot on a radiator. Once sprout appears, water regularly, but do not overwater. Your amaryllis will grow quickly and produce its spectacular huge flowers. Remember to keep turning the pot regularly to make the stalk grow straight as they have a tendency to grow towards the light. Once in flower, it's best to keep plant out of direct sunlight. Simply remove each flower as it fades. Your bulb will produce several flowers.

Aftercare: When all flowers are gone, cut off the tubular flower stems near the top of the bulb, leaving the foliage to continue growing. Water as usual and apply water-soluble fertilizer every four weeks. In spring, after danger of frost, sink the Amaryllis pot in the garden in a sunny place for the summer. Continue to fertilize. At the end of the summer, place the pot on its side and allow the soil to dry out. Cut off the dry leaves, and in about six weeks repot your bulb in fresh potting soil and start the growing cycle again.

Comments about American Meadows Red Lion Amaryllis Bulb:

I planted 3 bulbs in white pots for Christmas, but misjudged the time it would take them to bloom, so I had beautiful flowers to welcome the New Year. I have had amaryllises for many years, but have never had bulbs this size or flowers so huge. Just the best and so beautiful.
I now have the bulbs outside gaining strength for this Christmas!

Comments about American Meadows Red Lion Amaryllis Bulb:

I ordered three Red Lion bulbs on 10/25/12. I put each in a container and followed instructions. I had not one bit of green from the bulb until January on all three. I called and received a refund. I kept at it and late January green began to appear. One bulb put out three stalks over the next couple of months and the other two plants were magnificent two stalks each. I finally in late March put them away for next year. We got tons of pleasure and I will be ordering several next year! BE PATIENT!

Comments about American Meadows Red Lion Amaryllis Bulb:

I pot amaryllis bulbs every year for Christmas. This was the first year I've ordered from American Meadows and I was very impressed with the performance of these bulbs. Each bulbs produced two stalks and the blooms (seven per bulb!) were a brilliant red. The stalks seemed sturdier than other amaryllis I've potted.

Amaryllis bulbs are easy to grow, even for a novice. Pre-potted they make nice gifts for the holiday's. I deliver them as soon as the bulbs have sprouted so the recipients will have the fun of watching them grow. My children used to enjoy monitoring the growth process too.

                        I'll definitely order again.

I purchased these bulbs with the hope they would bloom before Christmas. For the 1st time I tried using a heating pad below to speed them up and it really does make them grow faster. WOW each bulb produced 3 stems. They all had huge deep red flowers that really looked amazing. I have been gardening for 30 years. The Amaryllis bulbs from American Meadows are by far the largest you will find anywhere! I always say a picture is worth a thousand words so I have downloaded a couple pictures. Truly amazing flowers that will kept on blooming for 6 weeks.

Received this bulb as a gift for the Dec. holidays. Gave it minimal attention. Huge blossoms, that kept coming, five in all, with three stalks emerging for a total of 15!!! flowers - have never seen that. Will definitely buy from Amerian Meadows for my spring planting. Thanks for adding some warmth during this cold winter.

For some reason my bulbs didn't come out as good as I expected (maybe I planted them so far after the bulbs arrived) and when I called them to tell them about it, they kindly replaced the bulbs right away. I'll buy again and agian.

Comments about American Meadows Red Lion Amaryllis Bulb:

I work overnights as a hospital pharmacist. When one of my technicians is sick or takes time off, it's not a popular shift to get volunteers to cover. This year I gave an amaryllis kit to each of my co-workers who had stepped up to fill in. They loved them! Sadly, one out of over a dozen failed to bloom, but the recipient plans to care for it over the summer and try again this winter.

This is THE best Amarylis out of the dozen varities we have. The four blooms were each at least two times the size of our hands. The guests we had in our home could not believe the plant was real!

I planted it too late...didn't pay attention to the instruction sheet, so I had a Valentine Amarylis....somehow that was actually better. It shot up blooms twice, smaller the second time but every bit appreciated in our gloomy late winter.

Each year we choose a different variety of amaryllis to give as thank you gifts to our customers at Christmas. The thank you notes & photos pour in as the bulbs begin to bloom. We, in turn, are able to share their enjoyment of these magnificent flowers and the customers certainly remember us. We also add to our own collection & appreciate seeing these large flowers in bloom when it is still winter outside.

These were a great price, [...] and are fairly manageable for a beginner-level indoor gardener like myself, with a tendency to drown plants with too much love and water. They took months to bloom and only 2 out of 5 have bloomed thus far. But I have no idea what I am doing so there's that. I just wish the instructions were more detailed as in exactly how much frequency and watering constitutes "sparingly" and that the directions also included images of this mysterious thing one does after they bloom, but I found more information online so all is well. I have read that forcing bulbs is very difficult so I am merely delighted that I got 2 gorgeous blooms so far, which had the manners to bloom right before a dinner party, and was impressed with the packaging, price, and expeditious arrival.

                                          Foolproof Amaryllis, Indoors and Out

Everyone loves amaryllis, and if you've grown them, you know how quickly and beautifully they bloom, almost like magic.  Any bulb with an eight to twelve-inch bloom that flowers in just a few weeks in a small pot has to be special.  That's why amaryllis has been the top "Indoor Bulb" forever.  It does just fine in very mild zones out in the yard, but in most of North America, amaryllis is a house plant, and one of the few that is happy to bloom indoors while the snow flies outside. Best of all, growing them beautifully takes absolutely no gardening talent or experience, and that's why they're so popular in "Gift Kits" for the holidays.  If you've never planted a seed or grown a bulb, you can be an amaryllis expert in minutes. Simply plant your bulb and add water. It's really that simple.

Growing Amaryllis Indoors. (For Outdoor instructions, see below.)

Most amaryllis are imported from Holland, and arrive in the United States during the fall season.  Then, they're sold in garden centers and online for bloom as houseplants during the holidays and into the winter. First, let's cover the basic "How-To" for indoor growing:

                                          When Growth Appears
                                          In Flower
                                          Minimum 60°
                                          Water
                                          Minimum 60°
                                          Water
                                          Water
                                          Heater
                                          Sparingly
                                          Bright Light
                                          Keep Moist
                                          Don't Overwater
                                          Keep Cool

                                          Pot, Soil and Watering:

                                          Amaryllis samba
If your amaryllis doesn't come in a "kit" with soil and pot, you'll need to find a proper pot.  Amaryllis bulbs are the size of a very large onion (or larger), but they like to be somewhat crowded in their pots.  Choose a pot that allows about one inch all around and one or two inches below your bulb.  For soil, Martha Stewart simply suggests "potting soil" but another expert suggest 1 part loam, one part peat moss, and one part sand.  When you pot the bulb, be sure to leave its "shoulders" sticking up out of the soil.

Once your bulb is planted, water sparingly until the sprout is well out of the bulb. (It won't take long.) Then water regularly and your amaryllis will produce its spectacular huge flowers. Remember to keep turning the pot regularly to make the stalk grow straight as they have a tendency to grow towards the light.

                                          Aftercare:

After winter bloom, if you want to rebloom your amaryllis, it's quite simple.  When blooms fade, cut off the tubular flower stems near the top of the bulb, leaving the foliage to continue growing.

Water as usual and apply water-soluble fertilizer every four weeks. Once spring arrives and frost is past, sink the Amaryllis pot in the garden in a sunny place. Continue to fertilize. At the end of the summer when frost threatens, simply pull the pot out of the ground, wash it out, and take it inside, and allow it to dry out completely in a warm dry place like a utility room.  Once the leaves are dead and the bulb dry (usually 5 to 6 weeks), the bulb is ready for repotting.  Simply cut off the dry leaves, and repot your bulb in fresh potting soil and start the growing cycle again.

Since these bulbs are tropical (native to South America), they can be grown beautifully outdoors in very warm and frost-free zones.  This means from southern Georgia down through Florida, south Texas, and much of the Pacific coast.  Planting time in these areas is usually September or October, and if the bed is well-cared for, the bulbs will stay in the ground and flower for years. If you'd like to propagate your amaryllis, our friends at Floridata.com have good Instructions.
