USDA Plant Hardiness Zones

To help gardeners understand which plants will grow well for them, the entire USA has been segmented into ‘Plant Hardiness Zones’. Knowing your zone number is helpful when shopping for plants because:

  • Cold-area gardeners can avoid buying plants that simply won’t survive their lowest winter temperatures.
  • Warm-area gardeners can steer clear of plants that need a period of cold weather in order to bloom again.

This the first spring after planting last year. The first year yield was nice but this is impressive. I'm looking forward to what the mid and late summer selection will look like. This was a barren septic tank drain field area for our new home. There is quite a hill and slope, however, thanks to the wild flower population it looks like most of the soil is going to stay up where it belongs.

I bought 5 pounds of the southeast mix and planted early summer(june 1 2012) in south central mississippi. The area is 12 x 450 a little over an acre.I sprayed the area twice with roundup before planting and disked 3 times.I also applied a little 13-13-13 and disked in.I just walked ( May 29 2013 )the wildflower patch and this is what I got.99% gloriosa daisys 5 feet tall, 1 not 1% wild cosmos,2 not 2% shasta daisys, 3 not 3% wild lupine 1 not 1% globe gilia,The gloriosa daisys are 5 feet tall and have overpowered everything else.I just wonder if they sent me 5# of gloiosa daisys.I would not recommend unless you want a gloriosa daisy patch. They are starting to fall over and I don`t know what will happen then? The same thing happened last year but not as many Daisys.

Comments about American Meadows Southeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I prepared the ground carefully, clearing the old grass and plants, and then tilled the earth. I left it rough, and broadcast the seed by hand. The soil is poor, but is in full sun. Germination was great, and it has been flowering for weeks already. We have a lot of Deer, and although they graze the edges, we have not had any real problems. No watering or fertilizer was used. Broadcasting the different seed sizes was difficult, and resulted in patches of different plants across the area.

Comments about American Meadows Southeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

We ordered this mix for a meadow and took great care to prepare the soil and plant as recommended. While the annuals performed ok, 95% of the perennials from the mix are yellow coreopsis with a few Shasta daisies. Out of the 11 perennials that are supposed to be in the mix, we only see coreopsis. After they are through blooming, there is no color the rest of the summer. Very disappointing.

Comments about American Meadows Southeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I planted my seed from you in the early summer, thinking it would be too late for any results. The soil where I planted is very poor quality as far as garden soil goes, but the seeds sprouted and, in spite of the poor soil and dry weather, they soon began to flower and cover up the unsightly spot it was in. That was in 2016. A second crop has voluntarily sprung up this spring, more abundant and beautiful than last year. Not all the seeds in the packet grew here, but the ones that did are simply marvelous. I gave the little Christmas packet you sent me, to my sister for her to plant at her house. Her patch is growing, and she is, as I am, grateful for the results.

I have a slope at the front of my yard that was difficult to mow. We also have a community garden very near my home, so I wanted to plant something that would support our local bees. Both the bees and the birds have enjoyed the flowerbed.

Here in SW Florida we do not get a freeze. Thus I planted seeds about three to four weeks ago. Some plants are about six" tall now and looking good. Others just starting to show first sprouts. Cosmos came up quickly and a few are blooming already.

I usually buy seeds from several companies so I am not relying on one, just in case. This was the first year I bought seeds from American Meadows. I planted several acres, not just a plot, and the comparison was astounding! American Meadows flowers grew faster, bloomed earlier and thicker. It is astounding to see the difference in the FOUR different companies I bought from. They are still blooming.
From this day forward, I will only buy from American Meadows. I did my own experiment and know the results firsthand.

I planted this mix in a very sunny spot that gets a lot of attention. The late spring was dry so despite regular watering, not much came up until the rains really started in earnest. Everything in the mix has grown. All the annuals and a few of the perennials have bloomed this first season with a nice variety of heights and colors. The low blue Chinese forget-me-not is a prolific bloomer, taming some of the more vibrant colors in the mix. I cant wait to see what the second season brings. Huge success.

The grass struggled on the edge of the yard so I made it a flower bed and planted these seeds two years ago. Last year was great and I fenced off the bed to keep rabbits out. This year there are so many flowers that I didn't bother with the fence. The honey bees and gold finches love it too. All the neighbors love getting fresh cut flowers - we are having a blast.

This is a great product for a large area that you need to spruce up or an area that you don't wish to cut. We used this at our vacation rental property south of Asheville, NC. The lot in question was about 0.5 acre of grass and the approach is very steep. I planted it in May and these shots are from August of this year. Some of the flowers are approximately 6 feet tall. I planted it as directed and nothing but rain, sunshine and time made it grow.

I used the wildflower seed for a small meadow I cleared on our wooded lot. I'm in my second year now, and add new seed every year. The perennials from the first seeding two years ago returned thick and lush as hoped and expected. This year's seed will take some time before it shows its stuff, but the plants are sprouting nicely. Now that I know which of the seed species within the mix are suited to the soil and lighting conditions, I intend to buy more of those particular species. I'm quite impressed with the results of my meadow experiment so far, and can't wait to order more seed!

My only complaint is that when I used these seeds to "guerrilla garden" (brighten banks of nearby train tracks) the train company chopped 'em down before they could be enjoyed. That was a surprise, but, no fault of the seeds. Recommend.

Planted a small area this year to see how flowers would grow in
poor soil along part of my driveway. Did some soil admendment and the flowers have done very well. They continue to bloom
late into August. The Cosmos have been spectacular!

I was/am surprised by the height of the cosmos (some are over 6 feet!) but they been slow to bloom (some haven't even shown a bud yet) and the cosmos have dominated other flowers (my guess) from growing. However, I am hopeful.

Comments about American Meadows Southeast Wildflower Seed Mix:

I planted a wildflower patch in an area with erosion. I was hopeful there would lots of blooms to use for my son's wedding. I didn't time it so well so we planted extra. I have tons of new plants coming up so I'm quite hopeful I have timed it right. The earlier blooms did beautifully as cut flowers. They lasted for days.

I planted a bit more than an acre very late for us, about late May. I tilled and raked the soil with my tractor, spread the seeds mixed with sand at a 10:1 ratio of sand to seed, rolled the soil and left it. I was concerned not much would happen, but took a shot. I did have some weed start early in June, but the wildflowers have come on strong. I plan to cut and drag after several frosts, and overseed this winter. Have a good meadow now, should have an excellent one in the spring/summer of next year. The seed was very high quality, and had an unusual amount of germination in the middle of summer.

It was hard work hand seeding, but with the good rains this spring germination was great, and there is more to come.

                                                      Q & A

                                                      Plant With These:

                                                      USDA Hardiness Planting Zones

To determine if a plant is sufficiently cold hardy, the USDA created numbered zones indicating winter low temperatures; the lower the zone number the colder the winter.

                                                      • If the coldest winter temperature expected in your area is -15°F (zone 5) then any plants rated zones 3-5 will survive the winter temperatures in your area.
                                                      • If you live in very warm winter areas (zones 9-11) plants with zones 3-4 ratings are not recommended. The lack of freezing winter temperatures do not provide a time for winter dormancy (rest).
